Missing local area connection system tray icon in Windows 98

There is a local area connection icon for the system tray to show activity over the network. It looks like this: [IMG] but mine is missing. I can't seem to figure out how to get it to show up. I suspect that perhaps I haven't installed all the necessary components for Windows 98, but I'm not sure what I'm missing because the connection to the internet works fine. Any Windows 98 gurus out there that can help?

BTW, I already tried this but the checkbox mentioned doesn't seem to be there. So I have either navigated to the wrong place to find it, or there is some Windows 98 component I chose not to install without realizing the consequences.

Having this icon visible in Windows 98 would make it easier to see network activity when in full screen mode. Any helpful suggestions out there?

Try to install Net watcher component through Control panel->Add/remove programs (Windows components tab, System tools set).

Net Watcher puts an icon in the system tray, but it's not the right one. I also tried the Internet Connection Sharing component, but it too does something besides what I described. Perhaps I am remembering incorrectly and Windows 98 doesn't have this function. So far, my search leads me to believe that it may not have been implemented until Windows 2000.

Isn't there a check-box in the properties of the connection to show its status in the system tray? I don't remember good old '98 days with enough precision, but XP has it.

The checkbox isn't there. Like I said before, I'm beginning to believe that this feature wasn't introduced until Windows 2000, or there is some component I haven't installed, or some other setting that I'm not using that makes it appear (like Client for Microsoft Networks, or something).
