I am following the instructions to upgrade to Windows 10. I downloaded the MediaCreationTool.exe file for 32 bits, and executed it in my Windows 8.1 VM. It started, asked me what I wanted to do, asked for a password, and said it had some set up to do. It then just disappeared from the task bar at the bottom of the screen. It never got to the "Downloading Windows 10" screen.

    Hello Brian,
    1. Start your Windows virtual machine -> click on Start and type in the "Search" box "cmd" -> on the top of the list
please right click on the "Command prompt" and choose run as administrator.
    2. In the Command prompt window please type the following command:
    sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
    3. Once the system scanning finished please restart Windows and install Parallels Tools once again and then upgrade to Windows 10.

    Unfortunately, this didn't work.

I ran the sfc command as suggested and after it finished, I had this message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios." I looked for the CSB.log file, but couldn't find it.

Anyway, I then restarted Windows, reinstalled Parallels Tools and double clicked the downloaded file (called "MediaCreationTool.exe"). The same result: "Getting a few things ready", "What do you want to do? Upgrade this PC now." and "Getting a few things ready." Then nothing, though Parallels used 100% CPU for quite a while, but there was no evidence of any process working. I let it go for a couple of hours, but no indication of anything happening.

When I try to run it again, it ends with a message "There was a problem running this tool. We're not sure what happened, but we're unable to run this tool on your PC. If you continue experiencing problems, reference the error code when contacting customer support. Error code 0x800704DD-0x90016."

Fortunately, I've been working with a clone of my Windows 8.1 VM, so I can start over.

RESOLVED - The Parallels support team was able to get the upgrade to work. She did two things - I don't know which one actually fixed the problem. She increased the RAM size of the virtual machine to 2GB. And she signed into Windows using my Administrator account. (I had been using a Local account.) We then went through the upgrade process, which proceeded as described in the Knowledge Base article.
