My wife hasn't used parallels on her MacBook Air since before I upgraded to Yosemite. She hasn't needed to use it as often as she though she would when we purchased it as a preinstalled add-on when we configured it online. She's taking a trip and will be needing it now, so my project will be to get it upgraded ASAP. However, I don't think she ever created an account with the registration. Since it came preinstalled, I'm not sure where the product key would be to do an upgrade over purchase of a new version. Also, can I upgrade it directly without a fresh install? Another problem is low disk space. She ordered her MB Air with only 64gb hard drive. With Parallels and only a few applications, she has just under 5gb currently available. I've cleaned out photos/videos/etc. to get that much room. So I don't know what the process will be (upgrade vs fresh install) and how much room she'll need. What's the best plan of action? TL;DR- Can I do a straight upgrade from v7 to v10, where do I find product key on preinstalled version so I can purchase an upgrade, is under 5gb hard drive space too little for upgrade?
Hi SteveE1, According to our licensing policy, an upgrade to Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac is supported from the following versions only: Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac, Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac Upgrade, Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac, Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac Upgrade. After installing Parallels Desktop 10, you do not need to reinstall Windows or create a new virtual machine. You can use your existing virtual machine. Before installing or purchasing Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac please check the system requirement for Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac, About " low disk space issue, Parallels Desktop application requires about 850 MB of disk space on the boot volume (Macintosh HD) for Parallels Desktop installation and about 15 GB of disk space for each virtual machine. Please make sure you meet the system requirements to install Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac.
I ended up downloading Parallels Desktop 9 for it and installed that. Since the computer is 3 years old, and 7 came preinstalled and she doesn't know where the paperwork is, I activated the trial version. Once we sort things out, we'll pay for the upgrade.
