Sharing Mac folders with Windows - trashed Windows desktop

I am experimenting with sharing my Mac folders with Windows, and when I turn this facility on (Virtual Machine/Configure/Options/Sharing/Shared Profile turned on), my Windows desktop gets trashed and I loose most of my icons. I have not completely lost them as when I turn it back off the desktop returns (although I have lost the layout).

Any thoughts as to why this is?

Not sure what "trashed" means. When I did it (if I recall correctly), Windows desktop disappeared and VM was using Mac desktop. That is the only way it can work, as when you switch off the VM, Mac desktop still exists while VMs desktop is not there. So mac cannot use VMs desktop...
Therefore, if you share desktop, it really means that Windows will use Mac desktop. You can add icons to Mac desktop of Windows stuff, but when you switch VM off, those become kind of orphans. I think Parallels has some 'clever" solution - I think the VM gets started when you click on something belonging to VM stuff...
As I said before, sharing desktop becomes confusing, but if you think about the logic (Mac exists always, VM stuff only when VM is started...), it is quite logical and reasonable solution.
Oh yes, and if you ever find really robust solution for not loosing desktop layouts - in Windows OR Mac - let everyone know. I tried every I could find.
I stopped counting how many times my carefully designed desktop was reset by OS (Win or OSX) few years ago :-(

Honzall - thanks again - I am following up something you recommended before. While in the VM I elected to share a profile (I assumed allowing me to see the Mac folders). This seemed to happen, but, while I retained the base Windows desktop, most of the icons on the desktop had disappeared. There seemed to be no rhyme nor reason for which went - some Shortcuts went, while others did not, some folders residing on the desktop went, while others did not. They were all, however, Windows links and folders.

When I turned off the Shared Profile and restarted, the missing icons and links reappeared. So, they were not deleted or lost - merely not shown. I suspect that they still resided in my 'Desktop' folder deep in thre bowels of Windows. I am very OCD about my desktop layout, I am afraid

I definitely had the Windows desktop, just most of it missing. So - any thoughts?
