Hi there, I am a long time Mac owner and recently we have replaced our book keeper's Lenova with a MBP. Since Quickbooks only has a Windows and online version, we needed to use parallels to run Windows in order to run QB. Our set up. A brand new MBP with max. RAM as recommended by our Apple guy. We had the Mac running a partitioned HD with bootcamp and Windows 8 on one side and Mac OSX on the other. When I got it from the shop, the tech had not realized I wanted to run Windows at the same time as Mac OSX. I asked that he install Parallels. He did, Parallels now points to the Windows 8 on the bootcamp side. I added a Magic Mouse and all is well. The problem that has arisen is that she needs a separate numeric keyboard for entering numbers vs. the mac keyboard. We tried to use a Bluetooth numeric keyboard (stand alone) and it only worked on the Mac side and after much research discovered that the particular numeric keyboard is not Windows compatible. I then plugged in her USB numeric keyboard that she used with her Lenova. No way to make the Mac see it properly and use it on either the Mac or Windows side. So.... Is there someone using a keyboard that is fully compatible with the Mac AND Windows side at the same time? I am fine with buying her a keyboard, wired or BT with full size keyboard and attached numeric keyboard... Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Ken
Parallels sends all input from all attached keyboards to the virtual machine. If the input from the numeric keyboard does not get sent to the virtual machine than it isn't really a keyboard or at least not what Parallels expects to be a keyboard. It shouldn't matter whether or not the numeric keyboard is compatible with Windows since you are using it on the Mac side. Parallels is virtualization software. It creates virtualized PC hardware which may be totally unrelated to your Mac hardware. What was the brand and model of the Bluetooth and USB numeric keyboards? Did they come with software drivers? What does About this Mac -> More Info... -> System Report -> USB and Bluetooth say about the numeric keyboards? If the keyboards are HID devices or have HID drivers, then a program like ControllerMate might help. You can use it to translate HID inputs into keyboard events. http://www.orderedbytes.com http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_interface_device
