    Hi there

My Hard Drive crashed, and I have installed a new one. I'm in the process of recovering my work files - mostly ok.

I had used Time Machine to backup everything except my applications - a lesson learned there!

I have reinstalled most applications and they are running fine.

When I reinstalled parallels it installed but wont run. When I click the Parallels icon it bounces once and then does nothing. Can anyone help me?

    Other information
    - I'm away back on version 4 - since i only need it for one r two PC only pieces of software
    - I have already followed the uninstall process as outlined in the Knowledge base and reinstalled, but no joy.

Many thanks if anyone can help

What OS X version did you have before and what OS X version do you have now?

This is important because if I remember correctly PDM4 only works in OS X up to 10.5 or 10.6.

    Thanks for the reply -

    Snow Leopard for both installations.

You are likely not using the latest version of PDM4 for the reinstallation. Download link in my signature, the second one.

    HI folks -

I am back from holidays and still trying to get this sorted - have tried uninstalling as per Knowledge Base instructions and reinstalling - but no joy.

Parallels Desktop icon bounces once and then nothing happens - can anyone help with this?

Does it matter that I have not been asked to enter the activation code on this install? Is it pulling it from some data restored by Time Machine - if so, does that matter?

    Please and thanks!

    Further Information

I installed Parallels 5 as a trial, and it worked, and was able to import my virtual machine.
I thought that uninstalling 5 and reinstalling 4 might work - it didnt :-(

So I know that Parallels works, there just seems to be a problem with installing 4
Since its the one I have the license for, and I dont fancy forking out more money...

    Any ideas?

PDM 4 is not compatible with snow leopard, that's why.
On my first post on this thread I said "This is important because if I remember correctly PDM4 only works in OS X up to 10.5 or 10.6.", apparently is only up to 10.5.

I don't know how you are reading the chart, but the chart clearly says that PDM5 works on 10.6 or later, unlike PDM6 which works on 10.6.3 or later (meaning it doesn't work on 10.6, 10.6.1 and 10.6.2).

The article referenced in that post doesn't exist anymore, the thread dates back to 2009, the information is outdated, you are probably running 10.6.8 which wasn't available in 2009 (10.6.8 v1.1 was released in July 25, 2011, SL was released in August 2009, the date from which this thread dates back, most likely PDM4 is compatible with 10.6 but not 10.6.3 and later).

Thats fine - my problem with the chart was that the heading above the tick for PDM4 says 10.5.2 or later. I guess that 'later' means within Leopard, rather than generally.

It looks like there must have been some glitch in my system that let it run - maybe if it was installed before all the SL updates were applied.

Is there any way to get an activation number for PDM5 from Parallels - do you know if they do that? It seems to me that I can only buy 8. Would 8 open a virtual machine from PDM4?

    Many thanks for your help

Yes, PDM 8 can open a PDM 4 VM (it will convert it first time it's open, meaning that then, after converting, it won't work in PDM4 again, but that's not a problem). The only chance you have on getting a PDM5 license is from another user or on ebay.
