Routing internet through VM to Host

Discussion in 'Installation and Configuration of Parallels Desktop' started by Parallels User, May 9, 2013.

  1. Hi everyone,

    A bit of back ground:
I've just moved to China for the summer and I'm having a particularly difficult time with their internet set up. In order to use the wireless I had to download a windows-only piece of software that allows me to "dial-up" to the network.

Currently, I can only access the internet using software in my Windows 7 VM. I do this by using a bridged connection to my Airport Adapter, then logging into the network with the special software. What I'd like to know is whether I can somehow route the internet from my VM to the Host Mac so that I can also access the internet with my mac software.

I've searched the forums but may not be using the right terminology.

    Thanks

By dialup, I'm presuming you mean a DSL connection that requires PPPoE, not the old screechy dialup modem. If that's the case, you don't need special software on the Mac side and you don't need to route the connection through the VM to your Mac (which isn't even possible; the VM is using the Mac's hardware for the connection, not the other way around. Follow these instructions which you can find in Mac Help:

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
Click Add (+) at the bottom of the network connection services list, and choose PPPoE from the Interface pop-up menu.
Choose an Interface for the PPPoE serviceEthernet if you are connecting to a wired network, or AirPort if you are connecting to a wireless networkfrom the Ethernet pop-up menu. Give the service a name.
Enter the information you received from your service provider, such as account name, password, and the PPPoE service name if your service provider requires it.
Select Show PPPoE status in the menu bar to use the PPPoE status icon to connect or disconnect from the Internet using your PPPoE service or to open Network preferences.

Click Advanced and set additional options, such as DNS or proxy server information if necessary.

  3. Hi Strells, thanks for the quick reply.

I've tried the method you suggested, but the connection fails almost instantly. There must be more to it then a simple PPPoE, which would not surprise me. The language barrier is going to slow my efforts to get any proxy or DNS info from the service provider. Is there any way of finding out what they are on the VM?

When you connect through the VM, can you look at the interface settings, either in Windows or on the command line (ipconfig /all)? Maybe that will give you a clue as to how to set it up on the Mac side.

Also, you say you are going through an Airport "adapter" (Express? Extreme?). You could try setting that up for PPPoE instead of doing it on your computer. I can't imagine that this software that only works in Windows does anything more than setting up PPPoE.
