Maybe this will help if you are trying to keep up with Parallels for MAC upgrades. I run Imac (12 gig ram) the 1tb internal drive and three external hard-drives. Using Parallels I often run into mysterious 'hangs' and 'incomplete' 'unfinished' processes, installs, including upgrades, updates, tool updates, and eventually just grinding to a very slow virtual machine. After several help sessions, complete uninstalls, re-downloads, etc. which did not fix my machine, I found the solution for my system.

All those symptoms are resolved by turning off and unplugging (upon occassion) all my external hard-drives. Parallels support does not recognize this as any kind of solution to any kind of problem. Apple techs do not recognize this as any kind of problem, but it fixes my system. After the update/upgrade/install/etc completes successfully, I turn the external hard drives back on one at a time and then watch for the familiar symptoms to appear over time, so I can do it all again.

At least it keeps Parallels running.

Only Windows techs would recognize that as a solution, probably has to do with the mapped drives on the Windows side (time-outs), if you turn of sharing mac volumes on Windows it will likely have the same effect as unplugging the drives.
