I have an iMac running Mountain Lion 10.8.3. I just loaded Parallels 8, followed by Windows XP service pack 2. In Windows, I went to Microsoft update to get the latest updates for XP but I get a message "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. ". I have another Mac running Snow Leopard right next to this one, with Win XP running in Boot Camp. On that machine,I can go in to XP and go to Updates, I am readily able to get the necessary updates. So the problem is apparently with the setup on the iMac and not a Microsoft website issue. So is it Windows going through Parallels through Mountain Lion? I checked the security settings in Internet explorer and disabled everything but I still cannot get the updates.

Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated.

I assume that what you mean is that you cannot get on the internet from this virtual machine, and not specifically Windows Update, meaning you can't get Windows Update nor any other site.

Use the network troubleshooting url in my signature, and also make sure you have no proxy configured in internet options in Windows.

I could get to the Update page but, when a clicked the button to get updates, I got that error message.

HOWEVER, I think I now have the problem fixed. The version of Windows I loaded on the iMac was XP Service Pack 2 and it had Internet Explorer 6. The other Mac using Boot Camp started with the same thing 2 years ago but, through Microsoft Update, is now up to Service Pack 3 with Internet Explorer 7. So I went to the Microsoft site, manually downloaded and manually installed IE 7 and SP 3. After this, I went back to Update and, LO AND BEHOLD, I was able to access the needed updates. So I'm thinking that Microsoft no longer is supporting older/non-updated versions of XP (like everyone else does with software) but, if your old stuff is "somewhat" updated, you can continue to get what you need.

DUNNO but it's working right now, I'm already up to update 93 of 121 so we'll see what happens from here.

Microsoft has announced that they are discontinuing all support for XP as of April. I have tried several times in the last two weeks to check for any remaining updates for my system and I have not been able to get ANYTHING - the progress bar in the update window just sits there. I suspect that they are already winding down their support, giving priority of their download servers to newer software versions and it will be next to impossible to get anything out of them for XP - but then, that's just my opinion....

As a followup to yesterday's post, I went online this morning and was FINALLY able to get updates for XP, so you might want to try this today.
