    1. I switched from MacBook Air to MacBook Pro 15" with Retina display.
    2. Installed the latest version of Parallels 8 on the new MBP wRetina.
    3. Moved my Windows 8 VM from MB Air.
    4. Reinstalled Parallels Tools in the Windows 8 VM.
    5. I have problems with Infopath Filler showing distorted documents and found knowledge base article that is talking how to resolve the problem: http://kb.parallels.com/ca/114655.
    6. However, when I go to "Virtual Machine menu ► Configure... ► Hardware ► Video" there are no options for changing resolution!?

How do I tell Virtual Machine, Parallels, or both that Windows 8 is running on MBP with Retina to allow me to adjust the resolution?

    Thanks for help!

Make sure VM Configuration > General > Guest OS type (that's the unnamed selector just below VM Name) is set to Windows 8.

    Somehow the option appeared?!

    Serv,

Thank you for your help. However, I don't see how I can change that unnamed selector "Guest OS type" it looks like greyed out icon.
I would appreciate very much if you can explain how to do it. In the future me or somebody else reading this might bump into the same problem.

Meanwhile, I was changing back and forth resolution in Windows 8 itself. That didn't produce any acceptable result. Still after some two or three changes of the resolution and subsequent restarts of VM and Parallels, both "Resolution" selector and greyed out Windows 8 icon appeared inside "Video" dialog box?! No idea what triggered that change.

Could you also please comment on the other solution that I found on Internet: In Mac OS host go to "Applications" directory, right click on "Parallels Desktop" -> Get Info and check "Open in Low Resolution". That will cause that Parallels all the time runs all the virtual machines in lower resolution. However, it seems that it produces the same effect as "Scaled" resolution selection in "Video"?

And finally, the reason we have to adjust resolution on Retina appears to be bad handling of high resolution by Windows 8 or at least some of the applications developed for Windows 8. Is that correct assumption and what should be done so that we can run Windows 8 in full retina resolution? Could Parallels resolve that apparent Microsoft deficiency.

    Regards,
    Miroslav

Guest OS type can only be changed for stopped VM. Sorry for not pointing that out upfront.

"Open in Low Resolution" disables high resolution for PD or any other application for that matter. This affects not only guest display but also UI fonts and icons. I don't see why you'd want to do that.

You can not change the OS type while the VM is running or suspended, shut it down first.

With the VM off, you can now change the OS type, when you hover over the OS type it will display a an arrow pointing down and if you click on it it will display a menu.

Note: Personally, I think the GUI solution Parallels found for changing the OS type is wrong and obscure to users, the arrow should be there, visible at all times, even without hovering.

Note2: Apparently serv already answered, I didn't see that, but still if you are reading this, serv, please consider my feedback about the GUI in my previous post. Thank you.
