    Hi Guys.

    Hope you can help.

I am running a MacbookPro with 10.8.2 , 16GB of ram and 2,7Ghz i7 processor and the latest version of Parallels 7. There is an issue i am finding running Parallels. As said i am running 16GB of RAM but I updated it a few days before. Before I just had 8GB. The problem now is that Paralles recognizes just 8GB! So I don't have a chance to use my 16GB.

Any ideas? is there a setting i need to enable somewhere? I deinstalled and installed Paralles two times without success.

    Thanks in advance

    BR,

    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,

While parallels is selected so that the navigation appears on top left next to apple
    select Virtual Machine
    then select Configuration
the setting you wish to change are under general.
Just make sure you leave enough ram for the mac (you cannot assign all your ram or cpu to vm and have your mac run properly.)knowledge base http://kb.parallels.com/en/112042 look under system requirement .

Maximum ram for Parallels 7 is 8 gb
    knowledge base article http://kb.parallels.com/en/113649
Also you should not give all your ram to the vm even if you up grade to Parallels 8.

    Nope

    Thanks for quick reply.

Yes you are right, MAx 8GB is allowed, but Paralles should recognizes my 16GB, so that i can split those 16gb into 8 and 8. Do you understand?

    BR,

    Daniel

First of all, does the system recognize the 16 GB of RAM?

Check "About this Mac" via the Apple symbol in the top left corner.

    hi Daniel,

Parallels 7 can only register 8 gb of ram no matter how much ram you have, I have Parallels 8 with only 4 gb ram. but in my screen shot it shows 16(second post), Try and select 8 gb ram and then check the performance of both the mac and the vm.

how many cpu do you have if only 4 you cannot give them all to the vm split them and the performance should get better.
Also as the Knowledge base article I pointed you to stated with parallels 7 the max ram is 8 gb.

maybe, but that doesn't solve my problem. I do a lot of CAD stuff at my vm and i'm not happy at the moment. i paid a lot of money for my mac and parallels. for what?

In Parallels 8 the limit of max RAM per VM was lifted to 16 GB: http://kb.parallels.com/en/115067

"You can now assign up to 16 GB of memory (RAM) to a single virtual machine."

How do you do that? When I go to General Settings it does not allow me to change memory, or I just don't know how.
    Thanks in advance.

Erm.. You don't change it in Windows, you change it via the configuration of your VM in Parallels, Configure>General>Memory. Please refer to the user guide for more information.

Sorry if I was not clear. I don't try in Windows, I try the exact same way you are telling me, but nothing will change.

Maybe you don't have enough RAM, how should I know why it doesn't work for you, it's not like you give any info to work on.

What can I say, refer to the User guide and Knowledge base at kb.parallels.com

What version of Parallels are you running? Only Parallels 8 can take more than 8gb of ram.

    I Run Version 8

    Thanks kat,

    Build 8.0.18354
    (Revision 823166; December 4, 2012)

I upgraded to Win 8. I double-checked all updates to make sure current. I ran Version 7 with Win 7 and all worked well. Then when I upgraded everything, I get an error message when starting Win 8 that it's not compatible with this version of boot camp, then I hit "Continue" and it runs, although slowly.

That's when I checked the ram in windows. It tells me I'm using 1 gig, but my iMac has 16 gigs of ram.

I verified under "About This Mac", also running OS X 10.8.2, 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 1TB drive.

Windows telling me I'm only utilizing 1 gig of ram is what started me poking around and wondering if this is what's making Win 8 run slow.

    Thanks,
    Al

First, make sure you are running a 64 bit version of Windows.
Only 64 bit versions of Windows support RAM higher than 4GB. Make sure this is not a 32 bit version.

In this image example taken from the web you can see "System type: 64 bit"

Secondly, you need to upgrade your Bootcamp drivers to a version that supports Windows 8. That's a bit more tricky because Apple doesn't make it easy. I think you can upgrade within Windows, or you need to run Bootcamp Assistant and download the package from Apple.

Finally, I don't know if that's the case, but you shouldn't upgrade a Bootcamp machine under Parallels, upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 requires recognizing and adapting to all the hardware, and it's hardware specific, should be made under Bootcamp.

Anyway, these are just hypothesis and facts, your situation isn't very clear for the info given.
