I had been getting the upgrade offer when I opened Parallels 5. So today, although I didn't see the offer screen, I thought that it was good for a few more days, like I think it said through Jan 17 or something like that. So I went ahead & purchased Parallels 8. So far I just purchased it, but have not yet downloaded it. I have the purchase email confirmation. I was looking for instructions & it said to read 1st. But it said that for upgrade it was only from Parallels 6. I don't want Parallels badly enough to pay for a full upgrade. & the reason I decided to go ahead to get the upgrade was because of the offer & because I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard (just purchased it & I know it doesn't work w Parallels 5). So were those offers misleading me about being able to get it for the $39.99 or how do I use that which I purchased to upgrade to Parallels 8? I have hardly been using Parallels lately as the main need that I had for Windows has gone away so I rarely need to use it. So now what do I do?
OK, after I made the purchase & posted this, I discovered the window that I had seen before for the proper upgrade from Parallels desktop 4 or 5. So I sent a response to see about cancelling the wrong order--which I have not downloaded yet--just got the confirmation email w the link to download or the attachments I guess it is to click. So hopefully they will respond quickly so I can get the right order--which is actually less by $5!
Now I have an additional question about the order to do the upgrades. I also just purchased Mountain Lion, but Parallels 5 is not compatible with that. So that is why I'm doing the upgrade to Parallels 8. So is Parallels 8 compatible w Snow Leopard? Apple store had said to upgrade the OS to Mountain Lion 1st, but wondering if that will work or if I need to upgrade Parallels 1st since Parallels 5 which I need to upgrade from doesn't work w Mountain Lion. Thanks for help.
* Parallels 8 is compatible with Snow Leopard (you can see that yourself if you go to the Parallels site and see the system requirements for Parallels8). * Upgrade Parallels first, OS X after. * AFAIK, the so called upgrade key, that you get for the upgrade price, allows only to upgrade from Parallels 6 or 7, I'm sure you need to buy the full Parallels 8 to upgrade from 5 (unless they changed that recently).
Actually they have changed it & I have been seeing an upgrade offer for Parallels 4.0 & 5.0 to 8 but only good until 1/18. As I said in the 1st post. So far I have gotten the automated reply so hopefully soon I'll get the reply on how to change to the right upgrade from the wrong 1 which I haven't downloaded yet. Thanks for clarifying the order. i actually found a thread that covered that. Apple had said to upgrade that 1st, but then I realized that probably woudln't work since Parallels 5 won't work w ML. Also I guess I need to take the computer upstairs & connect to my Windows back up drive & back it up before doing any of this. Then after upgrading to Mountain Lion, I'll start using my new WD passport back up drive which has a windows partition so I can get rid of my bigger Maxtor drive (physically, not memory size).
