same here. Tried everything, same error message. Bad enough that I purchased Parallels 7 at the end of June and will therefore not get a free upgrade to Parallels 8... Come on, Parallels, all I want is to install Windows 7 from my DVD in my mid-2012 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8 / Mountain Lion!

unable to connect to cd/dvd 1

I have a mid 2007 iMac and am having the same problem. I can't even install windows. Every time it gets to trying to boot from the CD, I get the unable to connect to cd/dvd 1 message.
Tried a few work arounds I found in the Forums, but nothing is working

Great help as usual from Parallels. I must rush out and buy Parallels 8!

Here's what you guys need to do. Just after entering the Windows authentication key, you need to check the "configure" check box and make a change to your virtual machine.

    Under

->Hardware ->CD/DVD 1 change from "Default CD/DVD" to whatever your actual CD/DVD is.

Because Parallels is such a buggy turd, it's too stupid to know that you might have actually put Windows into the 'real' DVD drive, rather than the virtual one the application just created.

I used this link to loose the problem: http://kb.parallels.com/en/4917
I could not get the other thing to work. I just made a image instead of use the CD/DVD. Now it works.

I had the same problem. SO WIERD, because I just created a virtual machine 3 wks ago without this problem.

I tried MarkH's suggestion above (->Hardware ->CD/DVD 1 change from "Default CD/DVD" to whatever your actual CD/DVD is.)
...and that did NOT make a difference (good idea, though).

Then I tried the method referenced above, at http://kb.parallels.com/en/4917
    ...and that worked.
...basically, create a disk image file, then install from that. (which seems like a great idea, especially after years of losing my installation DVDs).

    Thank you SørenU!
