I have a Windows 8 VM that I created from scratch, not an upgrade from Windows 7. When I installed the latest update for Parallels it automatically upgraded the VM Tools. So far so good. As soon as the Tools upgrade completes it asks to reboot the VM, cool no problem.

After reboot I get to the login screen. I enter my creds and it starts to log me in.

Here is where the wheels fall off, the screen goes black like it is about to get me to the desktop then nada, zip, zilch. The screen stays black and the CPU kicks to 100% and my MBA's fans all go crazy.

I can't get logged in no matter what. Only remedy thus far is to revert to a snapshot but as soon as I do the Tools upgrade kicks in again and I am back to square one....

It actually goes to a black screen. You have to be patient as it is writing the system DLL's. It will come back soon enough.
