why won't Parallels load on my MacBook Pro?

I was given a gift of "Parallels desktop for mac" at my recent mac users group mtg.
I'm trying to load Parallels onto my mac and the installation hangs up @ running package scripts....... time remaining has gone from 1 min to 11 mins.

I am running mountain lion OS 10.8, Parallels came in an orange and white box & lists Mac OS 10.4.6 or later Req'd.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

What version of Parallels? For ML, I'm pretty sure it's got to be the latest, 7, or maybe 6.
