I have been using Parallels on my Mac with a Windows 7 guest operating system for a few months now. All of a sudden today when I click the link to enter my online classroom, I teach online, my guest operating system Firefox opens. This is definitely new behavior because it didn't even know how to open up the jmlp Java file. I had not yet installed Java on that side. The only change between yesterday when it was working fine and today was that I installed the latest Firefox operating system update. Firefox on the Mac side shows itself to be the default. Safari is showing the Mac side Firefox as default as well. When the jnlp file hits my download folder it has the parallels symbol on it for the guest operating system as what will open it. I actually tried right clicking and manually telling Mac to open it with the Mac side FF but it is still opening up in the guest Firefox browser. I have tried to open the online classroom from the Windows side intentionally and I can get in, but I have essential tools on the Mac side that I will need for my work in there with the students. Has anyone seen this behavior and know how to set thing back to normal?
Right click this file in your DOwnloads folder, click Get info, in Open With section choose Mac Firefox and click change all.
Thanks for the reply, YanYana. Was there supposed to be a file attached to your post? Nothing was click able and I didn't see an attachment.
Sorry YanaYana. Since I had mentioned that I had tried the right click in the downloads folder in my original post, I figured it was a download file with a fix in it. I have tried right clicking and setting it to the Mac-side Firefox both in info and also in the form of telling it to open just that time with the Mac-side Firefox. When I tell it to 'always open with' it is still kicking over to the Windows side Firefox, even starting up Windows in order to do so. Yet when I check the get info window after trying to open the jnlp, it actually does show that the Mac-side Windows is the default and that it is set to open all files like it with that application. All of the places do show that Mac Firefox is the default right now. Safari thinks it is, Mac Firefox shows it to be, and the get info shows it to be, yet it still insists on opening up the Windows side Firefox. This time in testing it, the Windows side Firefox did the update that I think the Mac side did yesterday. I was hoping that might fix things, but no luck. When I try running it just that time with the Mac Firefox I get really odd behavior in that it opens a rapid sequence of Firefox windows that I cannot stop until I right click and trash the original jnlp file. I clean up the mess by closing all the windows and deleting all the partial files (file extension is literally .part) that it adds to the download folder in the process. I have three classes tomorrow (yes, even though it is President's Day). I at least can get in on the Windows side and I just changed over my headset to the Windows side. Classes can go on, but I would sure like to get a solution to get back to accessing via the Mac side of things where I can run some specific tools that I depend upon. I appreciate the willingness to jump in and help. Any other ideas?
Based on your description you have a mess with file association on Mac and Firefox behaves like a crazy. I suggest you to reinstall Firefox or contact Apple support (create a support request - it is faster) as On Parallels side everything works like a charm - the root of the issue is in file association on a Mac side which needs to be fixed.
