When i use the printer in the vm and then want to use it on the mac os, the usb screen doesn't come up asking me which machine i wish to connect to. It used to work but now it doesn't.

How can i reconnect the printer to the mac without shutting down the vm?

When USB connect then it will boot the current working OS. When you are working in VM then your printer USB boot VM. You can't find the USB from your MAC OS while boot VM. In order to boot your MAC os you have to disconnect the USB and reconnect the USB. Make sure that when you reconnect the USB you are working on your MAC SO and you cna do this without shutting down VM.

I finally figured that out but it would be nice if it would just do it automatically like it used to.

In Parallels 7 you don't need to switch between Host and Guest, leave it connected to the Host (OS X), and in Configure>Hardware>Print check both boxes. This will let you use the printer on either side without any switching. That's also why the behaviour has changed.
