Hi just a quick query really. I noticed the other day that even though I'm running OS X 10.6.2 and Parallels Desktop 5 build 9310 the prl_vm_app process shows in Activity monitor at a 32-bit process. I was under the impression it should be a 64-bit process? Any reasons why this is so? I am running Windows 7 64-bit in the VM itself. Cheers, Gareth.
Same problem I'm running Parallels Desktop 5 with Windows 7 64 bit installed. Windows reports that it's 64 bit, but prl_vm_app viewed in Activity Monitor is running in 32 bit. Why is that? The Mac is a 27" iMac Core i5 running OS X 10.6.7. Thanks for any help you can offer.
It really depends how your Mac System is running not if the VM is x86 or x64 bit. If your Mac is running 64bit kernel mode you will have a prl_vm_app process also run @ 64 bit. It seems yours mac is running a 32 bit kernel...check at boot or with uname -a in terminal it should be: Darwin MYHOSTNAME 10.7.0 Darwin Kernel Version 10.7.0: Sat Jan 29 15:16:10 PST 2011; root:xnu-1504.9.37~1/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64 hope this help.
Thanks for your reply. Actually, I found the reason. It's Parallels Desktop 5. I downloaded and installed a trial version of Parallels Desktop 6. When I ran that and booted the Windows 7 64 bit VM, the process prl_vm_app ran as a 64 bit application as shown in Activity Monitor. So it looks to be a Parallels thing. Thanks for your help.
