Hi, I recently have been having trouble with the windows 7 application folder. Every time I click on it, it shows a question mark symbol over the folder, and I can't right click or keep clicking or anything. It just stays like that, so for some reason I now can't access my windows 7 applications from my dock. I run windows 7 on parallels 6 desktop if that helps. Does anybody know what is going on? What should I do? I uploaded a screen shot to show my problem. Thanks, Will
can you open windows 7 I never use the applications folder. I open the Windows menu & can get to the programs from there. Does that work for you? Is Windows 7 installed directly in Parallels or do you have it set up in Bootcamp & then use that as a VM? If you can open the Virtual Machine so you have Windows open then go to the Windows start menu & see if you can find your applications there & open them that way. If you can, at least you know they are still there. It may have lost the pathway to find them or something. Not sure about that, but I think sometimes computers can lose how to find stuff. If that is the case, not sure how to set up associations again. But you could try nosing around in settings & control panels or places like that to see if there is anything that sticks its head up. I had a really weird thing when I was 1st getting started using Parallels. I do Outlook in Bootcamp & bootcamp as my virtual machine. At 1st I had trouble opening file attachements since all my sofware was on the mac side. Then I downloaded Adobe Reader, but it still woudln't open pdf attachments by clicking on them. But then I noticed I guess in bootcamp, can't remember but I saw on the Windows desktop that all the pdfs were showing a Pages icon. I have no idea why. I think I clicked on 1 to open & I think I had to tell it what program to use. After that, the icons switched to appropriate image & now it knows what software to use. So in that case it had lost the association with the right program. Maybe yours has lost a different association which you might be able to figure out how to tell it to find. Hope something in this might help, since you hadn't gotten other replies. That is frustrating when you are trying to figure something out.
Actually yes I can access windows 7 apps elsewhere but often it is the strangest thing that it won't work on the mac side. I have windows 7 installed on parallels and no boot camp or anything. I'll definitely take your advice to fool around with stuff, although it hasn't been too much of an issue...just a little inconvenient.
updates ? check stickies @ top of forum I'm still trying to figure out just how to get my Parallels 5 updated. Check updates doesn't work. It looks like it is working, but there are newer builds than the 9344 I have. But the sticky shows that the latest build is 9376 but I'm still confused at the process to get it installed as an update--not a new Parallels. The instructions are confusing. But since new builds are to fix identified problems if you don't have the latest one it could be that updating to the latest build for your version would fix the issue. You can download the read-me file which tells what they fix. Don't know if that would fix your issue but it might.
I have this same issue as of today. DId you ever find a solution? I haven't been to that menu in some time, but I was on a support call today with Apple where we deleted some local preference files, and I'm afraid somehow the Parallels information that drives that applications folder might have gotten caught up in that somehow. I need to call Apple back to see exactly what we did, if anything, that could have affected it.
This was awhile ago & so much has happened since I can't remember it all. Ended up having to erase the Mac & haven't installed Parallels yet & just found out today, after more crashes, that the Genius bar guy now is going to replace hardware to try to resolve my issues. This after 1 erase & then a 2nd right away & I'm just starting to get the Windows side back, but was advised to only gradually bring my files back as needed. But more crashes--yesterday mail just kept crashing & wouldn't even open but before that I got a brief blue screen after the desktop before the desktop returned. I did figure out how to get the update by going to the website that I think was referenced on the sticky. One old rule with computers that worked for me when we changed some things on the mac side that messed up Parallels. Shut down the computer & let it rest for a bit. Plus if you are as frustrated as I can get with things like that, taking a little breather to cool down--get a cup of coffee or just get away for a few minutes can help clear the mind & the computer. When both Parallels & then booting directly into bootcamp right away afterwards, after making changes on the mac side were messed up. I went & took a shower after shutting down. When I came back I booted into bootcamp. Opened Outlook as well. They were fine. then shut down & then booted on the mac side. Then opened Parallels & it was fine. So whenever things are acting weird, if you can't think of something else to do, & definately before making any drastic changes, try just shutting down--not just a restart--sometimes it needs to rest a little longer for the power to the volatile memory to go away & with it the garbage. It often works. If it doesn't, then you try other things. It will likely be awhile before I even try installing Parallels. The genius bar guy today suggested waiting a day or 2 to even install Bootcamp. This after I spent many hours this week getting things back closer to where they were. Hope this helped. My brain is feeling worn out right now, very fatigued after all this.
Hey, Sorry the replies to this thread were sitting in my spam mail for some time...basically what I think caused this issue for me is that I installed Wine components with the hopes that I could run certain windows applications on my mac that wouldn't work in virtual machine. Somehow, the wine files got corrupted and certain things weren't compatible, so I tried to remove wine completely from my computer, and in doing so, I somehow accidentally tinkered with some things I shouldn't have, and ended up having to open windows 7 applications in windows from now on...but not much of a problem. I still haven't fixed this issue because I still have no idea what's going on. Kathi...I hope you can get your problem fixed!
WillB, do you shut your computer down at night or other times? I would try that & leave it off for a little while & that might just fix things. As far as Windows apps that might not run in Parallels, you could set up bootcamp & install Windows there & Install those apps there in bootcamp. & then you can use bootcamp as your virtual machine or I guess you could leave it the way you have it. I have a proprietary co app that requires Windows & "they don't support Mac" or dual boot systems either. So I figured I'd be safest installing it in bootcamp. I had been running it in Parallels & it seemed to be working ok, but maybe that contributed to all the crashes. Not sure how that works setting up bootcamp after you already have been using the computer. Each time it has been set up for me it was starting from scratch. One thing I didn't realize after the erase & then when i was reinstalling Windows was that after it is done you need to insert the Apple install disc to install drivers in bootcamp. The Microsoft store people knew that & told me (I had an appt for help there & asked if it was ok if I installed it myself & just asked them for help when prompted to do something I wasn't sure about. I'm still waiting for a call from the Apple store that all the parts are in. On Wed I talked to the head Genius when I was in for a One to One appt & he said they had all but a HD bracket. Sounds like they are replacing about everything including logic board, RAM, HD & the connectors between them, trying to cover all bases--even though tests did not show a hardware problem. So I'm hoping & praying that the hardware replacement fixes it, but since we really don't know what has caused the crashes they are just following logical steps that they hope will work. I did get my new WinMob6.5.3 smart phone that I sync to Outlook all set up & activated so I will at least have a reliable phone w email & web (although web on a WinMob smart phone isn't much fun except for mobile sites) while they are working on the computer. But all this & procrastination has me without having started my income taxes so I think I'll try to get them done before taking it in. I've been mostly working in bootcamp since I have not reinstalled Parallels. A bit of a pain, but it has not crashed again since the 2 previous times. I'm hoping though that my last year's tax return in Turbo Tax got backed up. Windows back up had given me an error message so I just did a mirror back up. I did see the Turbo Tax icon on the mac desktop in the time machine backup so maybe it got backed up there. Apple said it was just a short cut but hoping. Hope you get yours figured out. I don't know what that wine components is that you mentioned. But if you haven't shut down your computer, try that to see if it clears up the problem. Old trick when computers are acting funny--sort of like restart but sometimes it needs to be off a little longer than a restart. it worked for me when Parallels & bootcamp got messed up after resetting preferences & deleting caches on the Mac side. I think those generally rebuild themselves. But it sure looked scary until I did the shut down & then when I booted up again it had cleared out the garbage that was messing it up & it worked ok. Some people had also suggested something about it running in Coherence could be more of an issue. I know I got error messages a # of times saying it coudln't open in Coherence, but then I was able to switch back to coherence. So not sure what that was all about. That was a minor annoyance compared to the crashes & all. I'll have to see how the mac side is doing. Its a pain to have to reboot so have been mostly just in bootcamp lately. But I should see how it is doing. Hope you get yours fixed. When they do have the mac in the shop, I will still be able to read emails, but not sure how this site would do on a WinMob6.5 phone, most sites are a pain.
You should check for update build 6.0.12092 Hi WillB, Parallels has released build 6.0.12092 which addresses this problem. Hope this helps everyone. Jan
6.0.12092 helps I just installed 6.0.12092 and the Windows Applications menu in my dock works again. Thanks!
