I am running Mac OS X and parallels 6. Recently the windows xp operating system became corrupted and would not open. So I thought that by downloading window 7 the problem would go away. So I downloaded win 7 on my mac but still parallels doesnt recognize it. When I try to open win 7 with parallels 6 it says:
"There is no operating system installed in this virtual machine. Please insert an operating system installation CD into the optical drive of your Mac and restart the virtual machine."

    I have tried:
New Windows Installation(on parallels virtual machine assistant) and when trying to "choose an image file" it wont allow me to select the desired exe file for windows 7.

    Any suggestions?

It's caused by the file format. PD 6 expects an image file format such as *.iso. An EXE is a Windows executable and not an ISO.

On a Windows machine, you could extract that EXE via doubleclick and then convert into an image as I think it's a self extracting file. I don't think you can open an EXE file on a Mac machine alone.

So, if you can gain access to a native windows machine it would be all easy. Or chose another download format that you can use directly.

Chris, thanks for the info... But unfortunately it didn't work.

I installed win 7 in 32 bit in ISO format and it was a no go. Seems that paralells wont recognize the file. I try to open it and convert the file but paralell says "failed to convert the virtual machine".

I pretty much have tried every which way to get paralells to recognize and convert the file from my mac desktop to a virtual machine.

The only other idea that I have is that I should try and delete all file from win XP that I was running. Again, the original problem was that the existing win XP that i was running on parallels 5 failed to open and a black screen appears. So in order to fix the problem I downloaded wine 7 and paralells 6 but that didnt help. When I try to click on the win 7 setup.exe file paralells wants to open that file with the win XP that is still on my computer. But it never gets past the black screen mode.

So should I try and delete those win xp files? And how would I do that? Not sure what to do...

Just to be sure that I got it right - the ISO can't be opened for conversion. It's like a CD, you use it with the 'create new VM' wizard.

The conversion only can be done with a existing VM, the ISO is an installation disk. Is that it, or did I misunderstand?

Chris , that is correct. I am trying to open/convert the ISO but no go.

Win xp is the current vm but it only appears as a black screen, like a system crash of some sort. When I try to open these win 7 files, parallels trys to use the vm/win xp but black screen appears and doesn't boot.

Rexrome, do I get you right, you follow the below-mentioned steps to create a new Virtual machine?:

    1. You have an .ISO disk image.
    2. You start parallels Desktop, go to File menu - New. The New VM assistant appears.
    3. From 'Install from' list you choose 'Choose an image file', then in the Finder window you choose the Windows installation .ISO image and then click 'Open'
    4. Click 'Continue'
    5. On 'Windows Product Key' page you enter Windows product key
    6. Then choose 'Like a Mac' or 'Like a PC'
    7. Choose the name for your Virtual machine (in case you do not like the default name) and click 'Create'
    8. Parallels Desktop will start installing Windows into the VM.
    ...

Could you please specify at what point you are not able to go further?

I need help with the same thing.

I get stuck on step 8. I begin to install and it tells me this mumbo jumbo:
    "PXE-E53: No boot filename received

    PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.

No boot device is available, press ENTER to continue."

    ....

However it won't let me continue until I put a new drive in or pop the old one out and put it back in.

    Then this pops up:
"Unable to connect to CD/DVD 1.

A file or device required for the operating of CD/DVD 1 does not exist or is used by another process, or you have no permission to access it. The virtual machine will continue running, but the device will be disconnected."

    ...

What am I doing wrong here? PLEASE HELP
