When I download and install the upgraded from 5 to 6, will I have two version of parallels (5 & 6) or does it upgrade my version 5 installation leaving me with just version 6? My concern is that there'll be an issue with the upgrade and I'll lose my VMs. Does the upgrade also upgrade the VMs so that they can't subsequently be used with Parallels 5? In short, what exactly happens during the upgrade process? Thank you.
PD6 will deinstall PD5, but it won't change your VMs (as far as I can tell). So a downgrade is possible afterwards (at least it has been for me). I went back and forth many times, right now I'm back on PD5 (I'm using SL 10.6.4). I only did this with FreeBSD as a guest OS though, so I can't tell if there is any special magic that would change things for e.g. a Windows guest. No matter what, you should make regular updates of your VMs anyway. Also shutting the VM down before of the update seems a good idea.
Hi Grembo I was just wondering how you went about downgrading to pd5? Was it as simple as reinstalling the PD5 installation file over PD6 or did you remove PD6 somehow before reinstalling PD5 ? PD6 is causing my system all sorts of problems. thanks for the help.
joevt this is one questions.... Is the PD6.dmg file you are referring to the one I download to do the original upgrade and how do you locate the uninstall option? Thanks
Double-click the ParallelsDesktop-parallels-en_US-6.0.11820.602974.dmg (or whatever the filename is on your machine) in Finder. The disk image will be mounted and a window should open (if not, click it in Finder under "Devices"). There are three icons labeled "Install", "Getting Started" and "Uninstall". Double-click "Uninstall" and follow the instructions. Make sure you do NOT tick the "Application Settings" checkbox in the "Uninstall Type" dialog. Eject the PD6 img, and install PD5 again. Make sure to make a backup before you attempt this (I never had problems, but better safe than sorry).
The latest version is ParallelsDesktop-parallels-en_US-6.0.11822.604190.dmg If you're still using 11820 then you can use the Check for Updates option to get the latest version. You could also download it by requesting a Trial version if you can't find a direct download link.
