I'm running WinXP SP2 using Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5638. IMac 5.1 with OS X operating system.
All desktop icons that appear on the Mac side and are functional on the Mac side, also appear on the Windows side and are non functional. If I try to delete the icon from the Windows desktop, I get an error message: "Cannot delete file. Cannot read from the source file or source disk."
If I try to run a Mac program alias (e.g., a Word document) on the Windows side, I get an error message: "The file could not be found. Try one of the following: *check spelling; *try different name"

Functioning Windows desktop shortcuts also appear on the Mac desktop with the extension ".lnk". These links are non functioning as well.

How do I arrange things so that the Mac stuff stays on the Mac side and the Windows stuff stays on the Windows side?

Here's a quick stab for a solution. Somewhere in "Configure" for Parallels, there is a check option to have icons on either side of the machine (OS X or Windows). I've never noticed this in Parallels 3 or 4, but when I installed 5, these icons appeared and covered the desktop to the point where they are very annoying. Unchecking the option in "configure" got rid of them.

I will say that the icons seemed to be fully active and immediately switched me back and forth between the two OS's.

Perhaps the latest update made this feature active in Parallels 3 and 4.

    Same problem

I have the same problem and would like to get rid of these icons on both desktops. Unfortunately I cannot find this chek button (icons on one/two sides) in Configure.

    Thank you for helping me.

In Parallels Desktop 5, the option is at Virtual Machine -> Configure -> Options -> Shared Profile. Deselect the "Enable Shared Profile" option.

    Thanks a lot !

This helped to remove the unwanted icons on the Windows side, but not on the Mac side. I would like to have none of the Windows icons on the Mac desktop since I can use the Dock and it looks as if my Mac Desktop will soon be completely covered by icons coming from the Windows side.

I hope you can help me further.

Delete the icons manually from the Mac side. First copy them to the Windows user desktop folder if you want to keep any of them.
