I have a Mac OS and use Windows 7 as my virtual machine. Last night I shut everything down just fine, and this morning when I started Windows, a black screen is all that pops up. Parallels says Windows is running, but the Windows desktop is not available. Just a black screen. Any suggestions??

I am having this problem, too.

I had the problem a few days ago, and then finally it started working again.
Tonight, Windows 7 is showing an all black screen again.
Looks like the problem is intermittent.

Same thing here....Windows 7 32 bit, Parallels 5, OS X 10.6.3, I did get the screen to show up in safe mode with networking, but that's useless. Seems like a graphics issue after I upgraded to 10.6.3....it worked fine previously. Even tried blowing away my virtual machine and reloaded Win7...same results. It thinks Windows is running, but graphics aren't working.

    More information

I recently had to replace the motherboard in my mac (thanks Invidia). The problems started after the motherboard swap. I wonder if the MAC address of the computer is used by Parallels to manage the display?

Also, when I try to manage my preferences for Parallels Desktop, I get an error message:
"Your changes cannot be saved due to improper user session initialization. The user session was established incorrectly. Try to establish a new session or contact Parallels Support for assistance."

I tried re-installing Parallels, but it did not help. The install routine seemed to timeout late in the process, but it did not produce an error.

I think these issues are related. It is interesting that only Windows 7 VMs have display issues. I also use XP and Linux VMs and they work correctly.

Shortly after my original post, the screen decided to work again. I was going to reinstall Parallels and Windows, but it decided to start working again. Now I'm afraid of suspending the virtual machine or shutting it off, and I haven't done that since. So I just keep it running and use it frequently. Hopefully it doesn't crash on me anytime soon!!

I am having this exact same problem. All was well until a couple of days ago, when i decided to go away on a holiday. Now, when I start my machine, i just get a black screen instead of the wondows desktop! The desktop opens up, but only in windows explorer. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong?
