Why does CPU usage go crazy for no apparent reason?

I've asked this question before and I've noticed that others have the same problem, but I have never seen an answer. Every so often, the VM goes crazy, even when there are no apps in use, with CPU usage shooting up to to over 100%, fans going crazy etc. It lasts 3-5 minutes then quietens down again. I wouldn't worry about it too much, except that when it happens, Dragon Naturally Speaking, a vital business tool that needs heaps of CPU power, goes a bit haywire for the duration. But it happens when there are no apps open at all, so it's not DNS.

It's obviously some program within windows XP going rogue that is doing it, but I have no idea how to find it . . apple activity monitor just shows that it's in the VM somewhere. Is there a Windows XP equivalent of Activity Monitor, that might identify the culprit? Anyone else know the solution?

Yeah, that Windows tool is called Task Manager. You can open it by right-clicking on the task bar at the bottom of the screen and selecting "Task Manager" from the menu that will show.
