Japanese text display issues

I am running my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Boot Camp installation from Parallels 5.0.9344. Because I need to run Japanese applications, in Windows I have 'Language for Non-Unicode Programs' set to Japanese. However, when running Japanese apps, while the majority of Japanese text is displayed correctly I am getting ??? instead of Japanese in some places, for example in the system tray of apps.

I do not have this problem when I run the same Boot Camp installation natively. Is there some setting I am missing in Parallels itself to avert this?

    Thanks, I'm loving Parallels otherwise.

    any resolution to this?

I am runningWin7 Home Premium Japanese on a new MacBookPro with 10.6.2. All Parallels support for the Win7 in Japanese is fine and Japanese websites in explorer are fine. But apps have this same problem of menus not appearing in Japanese, but rather in the garbled characters.

Is there any known issue here or better yet a fix?

Thanks, bgatton, I'm glad to see it's not just me. This is exactly what I am experiencing. I currently have an open ticket with Parallels support but so far no answers. It definitely seems to be a bug.

Are you using a Boot Camp partition with Parallels? As mentioned above, I am and when booting into natively the Japanese text is fine everywhere.

I am continuing to pursue my open ticket with Parallels support but now I see that in fact, with Parallels Tools installed even booting natively into Windows 7 the problem persists. Once I uninstall Parallels Tools in Boot Camp, the problem magically disappears.

I hope they resolve this ASAP. I gave the major competing product a spin before I purchased Parallels and it did not have this problem. I decided to go with Parallels because of positive reviews.

I am not using BootCamp, but have resolved my problem with settings in Win7. My Win7 package is JPN Home Premium. I solved my issue by going to Control Panel->Clock, Region and Language -> Location (second tab) -> select 日本.

That worked for me to bring the aps I needed back into full Japanese menu display.

I hope this works for you.

    Best regards.

Thank you very much for your kind advice, bgatton, but unfortunately this is not a solution for me.

Setting Location to 日本 does fix the problem of text corruption in menus in Japanese applications but it also entirely changes the interface and menus of the operating system. The Start Menu, Control Panel, Help files, etc are all in Japanese.

I want all of that in English yet have my Japanese applications, when I run them, display properly. With Parallels Tools uninstalled it works perfectly. It works perfectly when I run the Boot Camp partition using Fusion as well.

As I mentioned, I hope Parallels support fixes this bug ASAP.

    Cheers.
