I have a strange triple-boot configuration in my new Macbook Pro (5.5 version): I used diskutil to resize the MacOS partition and then installed Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux 9.10 WITHOUT Boot Camp. I use rEFIt for boot purposes and everything works great.

The problem appeared when I wanted to use Parallels in order to virtualize first the Windows 7 installation (I need some specific software only available for Windows) and then, if possible, the Ubuntu installation.

Since I am not using Boot Camp, Parallels seems not to recognize my Windows installation. Although I tried to manually configure the VM, setting ONLY the NTFS partition as the boot partition for the VM, as soon as it is started a "Operating system not found" message and there is nothing I can do to go on or to choose other options.

I tried to run Boot Camp wizard now, but since my HDD has several partitions, a warning stops me going on with that process. In the Boot Disks section in MacOS only MacOS and Network boot are available (which seems right, rEFIt makes the job on multi-OS boot).

Is there anything I can do to make Parallels to work with my current Windows 7 installation? How should I configure the VM? Should I change something on my partition/boot setup?

Thanks in advance for any help on this

There are folks at insanelymac.com/forum who try to seem to be trying something not dissimilar to what you're trying to do... only they work with hackintoshes, not real macs. Maybe you'll find some ideas there.

    Thanks a lot Shaddam IV!

To put some more light here, some folks suggested that Parallels is hardcoded to use ONLY bootcamp partitions. Anyway, I'll keep pushing to make it work this way, I do not want to use bootcamp at this time :)

For sure, any news will be reported here ;)

Parallels is certainly not hardcoded to use only BC partitions. I don't have a BootCamp partition, I only have a (virtual) Hard Disk off which I boot Windows. Good luck!
