I am new to parallels. You help is appreciated.

I am having some trouble with my Parallels virtual machine.

After using the application successfully to launch Win XP on my MACBOOK for about a week, here is what is happening now.

When I open the application it advises:

"Configuration file /Users/doug/Library/Parallels/winxp/winxp.pvs is already used by another instance of Parallels Desktop.

Do you want to override a lock and open file anyway (this action may be potentially dangerous since changes done by a concurrent user may be lost) ?"

If I click "no" and then cancel out and then click on the green "Power on virtual machine" button, the following message appears:

"Currently opened virtual machine does not include any boot devices. In order to be successfully booted the virtual machine should have at least one of the following devices attached: floppy disk drive, hard disk drive, CD/DVD-ROM drive.

Do you want to power on this virtual machine anyway?"

I then checked the boot sequence and the normal sequence of Hard Drive, CD, etc. is already selected. So it should be booting off the HD.

I cannot see any indication on the MAC task bar of any other instance of Parallels running. Rebooting the MacBook does not correct the problem.

    Related Issue?

Earlier this afternoon the MacBook screen backlight failed. I could make out the LCD images of the desktop in ambient light but no amount of keyboard interaction would restore the back light. Pressing the shut down button did not respond. Finally I removed the battery and then reconnected. When the unit booted up again the back light was restored and all other functions and application seem to be running normally. But apparently the system crash affected parallels

Is there by any chance a hidden temp file that needs to be deleted if the MacBook crashes? If so, where would it be?

    Thanks

I don't have any "answers" to this problem, but I do recommend you backup the .hdd file of your VM to a second location before trying anything else.

It might just be the .pvs file corrupted. So after you backup your .hdd file in Finder, make a new VM and use the .hdd copy, and see what happens.

    which version of parallels please?

I posted a fix the beta people sent me
    http://forum.parallels.com/thread6528.html

but i am very cautious about the Mac terminal
it is possible to do real damage in UNIX

so at your own risk if you try it
