    Mac Mini v2,1 (2007 model, 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 80G HDD, MatshitaCD combo CD/DVD)
    System: Tiger OS X v10.4.11 (852167), Kernel: Darwin 8.11.1
    Parallels Desktop 5, Build: 5.0.9310, Rev: 546799

    I upgraded from Parallels v3 to v4, and recently from v4 to v5. I am now unable to access the combo CDROM/DVD.

    I have tried:

    1) reverting to an earlier snapshot - the last snapshot fails, but the previous one succeeds;
    2) creating a new virtual machine and using the old HDD file;
    3) connecting the CD/DVD to an image file - this works;
    4) reconnecting the CD/DVD to the "default CD/DVD 1" device - this fails;
    5) uninstalling Parallels v5 via the uninstall option in the v5 install package;
    6) reinstalling Parallels v5;
    7) installing a new Windows VM from scratch, but CD/DVD is not accessible.

    all to no avail. I still cannot access the CD/DVD. Additionally, after Parallels messes with the device, I cannot use the CD/DVD in OS X until I reboot OS X. If I don't run Parallels, the CD/DVD works perfectly in OS X.

    The error message at step 4 above is:

    "Unable to connect CD/DVD-ROM 1... A file or device required for the operation of CD/DVD-ROM 1 does not exist or is used by another process, or you have no permission to access it. The virtual machine will continue running, but the device will be disconnected."

    I checked the Parallels log file and noticed these entries which are obviously part of the problem:

    Capv_Win64Patch_Deadline
    10:05:05.475 F /DVDImage:402:5003/ [DVD Drive:pT] Can not get access to IORegistry path

    Any ideas?

    oztrev, there is no need to reinstall something. Just go to VM configuration.
    Choose CD/DVD 1 and remove it from configuration by pressing "-" button.
    After this done press "+" button and select CD/DVD. This action will update
    virtual DVD with valid current settings.

    Solved.

    The CDRW drive has died now in OS X as well and no longer recognises any discs :-(
