I had Parallel (with Window XP) installed on my iMac running on Snow Leopard, and I have an external hard disk hooked up permanently to act as my Time Machine for quite some time. Recently, there was problem with the iMac hard disk and it was replaced by Apple (under warranty). The new hard disk was reinstalled with Snow Leopard, and then I have everything reloaded into this new hard disk using the Application - Utilities - Migration Assistant... procedures. Everything works fine except the Parallel. The "Windows XP" icon which I had previously now re-appeared on the desktop, but it couldn't find an application to open it. When I checked the "content" of this icon, it is a "Windows XP.pvm", it is some 10.7G so I believe what I have before is still there (Most of my stuff is in the Mac platform). After the backup as mentioned in my first paragraph above, I could find the "Parallels Explorer", "Parallels Image Tool" and "Parallels Transporter" under my Application folder. I guess most of the restoration was successful but something was missing. Do I need to reinstall the Parallel? I hesitated because I don't know if the documents and applications previously installed under my Window XP be lost. Would they? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hello PeterY, please try to launch your virtual machine from ~/Documents/Parallels - just double-click the .pvm file. If Parallels Desktop is functioning properly, virtual machine should start. In case you experience problems with starting application, please reinstall Parallels Desktop. Download links for Parallels Desktop 4 can be found here - http://kb.parallels.com/en/5802 (I assume you use Parallels Desktop 4).
