I'm running Mac OS 10.6 version of Parallels Desktop 5.0. I have a VM of Win 7 and have installed Office 2007. I have run into several occasions where I'll have the VM up, and Outlook will be running fine, but if I go to start something like Excel, PowerPoint or Access I get the following error: "The operating system is not presently configured to run this application" Are there any settings I need to look out for in my VM configuration to help fix this or is it a bug? Steve
Hi StevenJ, the issue seems to be hardly related to Parallels Deskop; there are some reports that reinstalling Office products might help. If it won't help, please consider contacting Microsoft for further assistance.
I disagree. After some testing I found that I can repeat the issue by changing Parallels modes. If I boot Mac and go into say Crystal mode and stay there, all MS Office products work fine. If I change to something like Coherence or Modal, I start getting the error. So whether that's an MS issue or Parallels issue I am not to say but I have to report things in case it is a Parallels issue. Could be a Snow Leopard thing too, don't know. Just seems fishy to me that MS stuff works fine if I don't play around with Parallels. Steve
I have had the same problem witht he same environmental variables. New iMac i7 with Win 7 as Guest OS. Loaded Office 2007. Now upgraded to SP2. Every other time I load, or if the system has been up for a while, It prevents me from openning the application and gives the same notification: "The operating system is not presently configured to run this application". I found anothe rpost that was having similar problems with application crashes that I was, and the recommended uninstalling the Kapersky Suite that paralles provides. As soon as I have done that, I no longer had any application crashes, but it has only been 30 minutes, but that it a new record for me in the last two days.
I've given up on Parallels for Office. I got a copy of Office 2008 for mac, ported my emails, contacts and calendar over and am never looking back. I still use Parallels for all the other windows apps I have that don't have Mac equivalents or I just can't justify spending the money on a Mac license. There are some Windows apps that are superior to Mac in terms of being up to date simply b/c Windows still has much better market share, but over all I'm happy with my apps are are pure Mac. I did uninstall Win Office 2007 and re-installed it, even tried the option where you don't force the Home Directory to be the Mac one thinking that some ini files might need to be written there like I've seen with other apps during this transition. Didn't work. Office for Mac is really nice. I won't miss the PC version. Steve
Here is a web page that explains the problem: http://www.tuaw.com/2009/12/27/para...ay-well-with-kaspersky-anti-virus/2#c24261838
FYI... I accepted Parallels' invitation to install Kapersky Suite on my iMac i5 & Win 7. I then ran into that "the operating system is not presently configured ..." situation shortly after I launched a MS Office app. So I removed the Kaspersky program and installed avast! AV (free version) and it has worked like a charm so far.
