All of a sudden I can't launch Windows XP. Yesterday I shut down Windows with no problem, then quit Parallels. Today I start Parallels 4.0.3.844, it shows my filename.pvm in the window, but then nothing happens. I try to select it and say "open" and it doesn't work.

I looked under library/preferences to see if there was some file I could delete and start anew and didn't find one. Having looked at some other threads, I see suggestions about using Parallels Explorer to find some file inside my Windows virtual machine to delete, but that seemed to be for unrelated problems.

I'm travelling and don't have access to original windows disks, etc., but I do have a backup xp.pvm file in another mac directory. I hope there's something I can try without too much trouble....Thanks!

    Hello,

Please follow these steps in regards to the issue:

Restart MAC, don't start any applications. Uninstall Parallels Desktop using the .dmg file given below:
    http://download.parallels.com/deskt...lsDesktop-parallels-en_US-4.0.3844.408728.dmg

Now, please follow these steps :

    1. Open Finder.
    2. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilities.
    3. Choose MAC HD.
    4. Choose repair disk permissions.
After running the repair disk permissions , restart the computer.
    Install Parallels Desktop once again.

I hope this will help in resolving the issue.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm travelling and will do this tomorrow when I get back and have my parallels installer disk. Can you explain why I need to use the uninstall file you suggested rather than just deleting the application and reinstalling? (The Parallels app launches fine; it just doesn't start the WinXP virtual machine. And I have repaired permissions since this error occurred.)

    Same problem

Hi - I have had this problem repeatedly, scaring the dickens out of me and always when I have a deadline or a presentation on Windows that I need. I wrote before, tried the advice and it worked for a while. This week I've uninstalled Parallels 5 times, doing the disk permission repairs on utilities etc but almost every time I've come back to it, it won't open again. I get a message that the VM was unexpectedly stopped (which it wasn't - I do a normal shutdown) and it asks me to relaunch 2x and then relaunch and reset. After about 12 of these messages repeated over and over I've had enough and start a reinstall. This takes me at least 20 minutes every time and I just don't have time for this! Why is this program so unstable on my computer? I am running Desktop 3 and Windows XP on Leopard.
