I have Parallels 4 on my MB along with Vista Home Premium. I'm leaning toward dumping Vista and then installing Win7. How would I take Vista off the MB? Would I have to delete Parallels also and then reinstall Parallels along with Win 7? Or could I just install Win7 over Vista?

I'm also considering getting the Parallels upgrade (5.0). If I make that decision, I think it would make more sense to wait for the Win7 installation. If I did go for the upgrade, what would be the best way to uninstall Parallels 4 (which I assume would also make Vista to bye-bye?)

If you want to keep your Vista and documents, then upgrade Vista in place. If you want to start fresh, all you need to do is open the Virtual Machine list and right-click on your Vista installation. Then choose delete. Once complete, just create a new virtual machine for Win 7. You don't need to uninstall Parallels.

    1. There is no reason to uninstall Parallels before installing some other Windows (or other OS) on virtual machine. Like just there is no reason to reinstall Office before creating new or editing existing document.
    2. There is also no need (until you really want it) to remove Vista from your MacBook. Like just there is no need to delete old document before creating new one.
    3. There is also no need (until you really want it) to install Windows 7 over Windows Vista. Like just there is no need to edit old document to create another one.

I hope you get the point - Virtual Machines (Windows in your case) are just documents for Parallels Desktop. You can copy, edit, transfer them, create new ones.

In your case I would recommend to create new fresh and clear Virtual Machine and install Windows 7 inside it, so you will be able to use your old Windows Vista Virtual Machine. Later, you can delete Windows Vista and switch to using Windows 7, or delete Windows 7 and return to using your Windows Vista. If you planning to switch on Parallels Desktop 5, yes, it is better to install Windows 7 using it, because we have many fixes for Windows 7 there.

You don't need to uninstall Parallels Desktop 4 to install Parallels Desktop 5. All required action will be performed automatically, during installation of Parallels Desktop 5.

All Virtual Machines are preserved, when uninstalling Parallels Desktop. When installing it back, it will search your Mac for existing Virtual Machines and add them to the list. The same point - you can uninstall Office, and none of your documents will be removed. By uninstalling Parallels Desktop you just remove the software, not the document (Virtual Machine).
