So I upgraded to Snow Leopard without knowing Parallels 3 would no longer work, no big deal, I've been meaning to upgrade to Parallels 4. I've now bought Parallels 4 and tried to upgrade my Parallels 3 install but it can't because one of my VMs is suspended, but I can't shut it down because Parallels 3 doesn't run under Snow Leopard. Is there anyway to force the VM to shut down so I can complete the upgrade? I'm not too worried about shutting it down nicely, I just need it shut down.
Any news? I have done the same exact thing you have. Has anyone responded to the post you presented? I am running Snow Leopard and I cannot open my Parallels desktop to shut down windows. Does anyone know how to get around this?
Hello, I understand that you are not able to upgrade Parallels because of suspended virtual machine error. To resolve the issue, you need to rename folder containing your virtual machines; the default location for virtual machine files is ~/Documents/Parallels. 1. In Finder, rename ~/Documents/Parallels/ to ~/Documents/Parallels-3/ (for example). To rename the folder, right-click or control-click Parallels folder, select Get Info and enter new name under Name & Extension section. 2. Install Parallels Desktop 4 from installation disk or using installation package. 3. Move your virtual machines from ~/Documents/Parallels-3/ to ~/Documents/Parallels/. 4. Start Parallels Desktop 4 and upgrade (convert) your virtual machines. In Parallels Desktop menu select File > Open..., locate your virtual machine folder in ~/Documents/Parallels/, find file with extension .pvs and click Open. http://kb.parallels.com/en/6659
Thanks for the replies. I managed to get this sorted out by dragging the .mem and .sav files out of the directory my VM was in. The upgrade to Parallels 4 then ran smoothly and it then quite happily upgraded my VM to the new format and everything is working as it should.
This solution doesn"t work I upgraded to Snow Leopard then tried to upgrade to Parallels 4.0. I am unable to do so due to a suspended machine from Parallels 2.5. I can't open the suspended machine to shut it down. I tried renaming the folder but in the Get Info window the name is "grayed out" and I am unable to rename it. I'm ready for a refund.......
Hello, In the Finder window may you please navigate to Parallels folder where you will get Your virtual machine.pvs file. Search for .mem file and delete it. If you are still unable to do so then please send us the screen shot of the error screen.
Get Info - Name and Extension "Greyed Out" In following the directions, when accessing "Get Info", the Name and Extension with the name Parallels is greyed out and I am not able to rename to Parallels-3 as instructed. Additionally, my folder does not have the files and extensions that you recommend to delete if if you have the greyed out issue. This is the most frustrating upgrade process I've experienced. Please see the attached screen shot and please advise of next steps. Crazy.
Hello, In the spotlight please search for .mem and .sav file or look into Mac HD-> Users -> Your Username -> Library -> Parallels and then look for the .pvs or .pvm file. Open it and delete the .mem and .sav file. http://kb.parallels.com/en/5999
