Start button grayed out (previously shut down normally)

I got 4.0 upgrade installed on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) operating system. All seemed normal with the exception of a page memory warning. I was troubleshooting that and shut down the machine normally it seemed. I did hid Shut Down a second time after the normal menu did not appear (picture 5). That's when the trouble started.

At the regular menu (picture 4), I found that the start button was grayed out and nothing I could do would allow a start. See pics. It appears that the virtual machine did not actually complete the shut down. How can I get it ready to start? The .pvm package appears OK (picture 3). Tried to restore it from Time Machine with no difference in the symptoms.

Thanks! Shutdown/Restart accomplished the same thing apparently. I'll keep your Terminal workaround handy though, until 5.x is available.
