I would like to upgrade my Parallels 3 build 5638 to parallels 4, but I would like to get some information first. I am currently running windows xp Pro in bootcamp. Like many, since installing parallels 3, I rarely used bootcamp directly. For that reason, I never notice that the upgrade to SP3 (from SP2) was preventing bootcamp from booting ("autochk program not found "), xp sp3 is working great on parallels 3. Now that I'm considering upgrading to snow leopard and parallels 4, I am concern that upgrading to parallels 4 will cause that error to manifest itself in that environment and I will lose complete access to my window's xp environment. Would someone please help me with my concerns? By the way, I tried top uninstall sp3, but windows was unable (seems that my only solution to get back to sp2 is a reinstall).

    thank you

    Hello Michael,

I would like to inform you that version 3.0 of Parallels Desktop is not compatible with Snow Leopard Operating System but very soon we will come up with a compatible build.

    http://kb.parallels.com/en/6637

Parallels Desktop 4.0. build 3810 and later are compatible with Snow Leopard operating system and you can install as you do on a normal Leopard OS.

For more information, please go through the attachment which lists the compatible software with Snow Leopard.

You need to upgrade your version of Parallels from 3.0 to 4.0 so that you can use it with Snow Leopard.

You can upgrade your version of Parallels Desktop to version 4.0.3844 (latest built) by clicking Upgrade button on the following link:

    http://download.parallels.com/deskt...lsDesktop-parallels-en_US-4.0.3844.408728.dmg

Upgrade costs $49.99. Most of known bugs was fixed in it and it is pretty fast and reliable.

    Backup and Convert

I just installed Parallels Desktop for Mac 4.0 and am backing up and converting my VM. Even though I only give 20GB to the Windows VM, I'm told that I have to back up 113 GB of data. This is likely because my Mac hard drive is accessed as the X: drive in the VM. Is there any way to prevent my entire Mac hard drive from being backed up as part of the backup and conversion process. There's no way to go back to Desktop 3.0 to unmount the X: drive without uninstalling 4.0 and reinstalling 3.0. Has anyone else run into this?

    Backup backs up all snapshots

I guess the reason for the 113 GB backup is that all snapshots were also backed up, but no, the winxp.hdd file was 103 GB so it's certainly backing up several hard drives worth of data.

    Anupama,

Thank you for replying to my post, but my questions is regarding a very specific problem between boot-camp and XP pro SP3. Like I said in my post, I'm concern about upgrading and experiencing this problem (the windows error message at boot time is "autochk program not found ". Currently I only experience this problem if I attempt to boot directly into boot-camp, I have not experienced the error in PD3. Will upgrading to PD4, cause the error to appear in the PD4 environment?

    Backup your windows files

A good way to backup (continuously) your Windows files is Microsoft's SyncToy 2.0 to an external HD. Highly recommended before the upgrade, because Timemachine does more than is needed to do for the VM backups.
