    Hi,

I need to increase memory on my c: drive from 7gb to 20gb to install software. I was able to gain unallocated space by using the Parallels image tool.

I rebooted XP and am now finding in disk management that the C: drive is listed as still only having the original 7gb but the harddrive is shown to have 20gb. How do I apply the extra memory to my C: drive?

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Hello Michael,

As far as I understood you were able to gain unallocated space by using the Parallels image tool, but you want to increase the existing C: drive.
There are different ways depending on what version of Parallels Desktop is installed.

If you have Parallels Desktiop 3.0:
You can use some third-party partitioning solution for advanced partitioning, like resizing your existing partition to a larger size.

If you have Parallels Desktop 4.0:
You can run Parallels Image Tool once again, and on the screen "Virtual Disk Capacity" you need to check the box "Add the unallocated space to the last volume". Then when you start Virtual Machine you will find that the last volume was increased(if you had only C: drive, it will be increased).

Similar problem - when on v3.x I tried to make more space but ended up making a new drive which didn't really help my problems - I am too short on space on the C drive .... and not knowing wondoze very well - I tried to clean up 'junk' --I am still not sure what is taking the space in C drive -for a long time I was OK.

So -- in v4.x I can expand ... but it says apply to 'last volume' - which I might think is the 'new drive' I made --

I see the button to consolidate - but doesn't look like what I want ( very much newvie here _

How can I increase drive C and maybe delete 2nd drive made?

Can you drag the programs folder from C to the new drive like you could in a Mac? ( to make more room ? )

Changing your C drive size after initial setup

Like most first time users of Parallels, when I did my initial setup, 7 GB was allocated to the C drive. By the time you install a few programs - poof all the C drive is filled. I did not want to reinstall Parallels or reinstall all my programs. I searched for a while before I found a FREE program and a website that helped with the step by step resize of the C drive. Here is some info and links:

Free program is from Linux and called GParted:

    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

The step by step instructions for using GParted (once you've downloaded) can be found here (includes window screen shots):

This worked well for me and I am not a Techie.

In upgrading from PD3 to PD5, I need to increase my C drive size as well. Shut down PD and run (from you Mac Apps folder) the "Image tool", making sure the "Add to last volume" is checked. Mine worked perfectly. I went from 20 to 30 GB, and recommend 30 GB for your XP system drive.
