I didn't get as far as you concerning the safe mode but my MacBook Pro locked up. I called Apple and they had me do an archive install of Leopard. Then I had to re-install Parallels along with several other programs to get everything running again. I haven't tried to install Safari 4 again since I am away from home where my Leopard disk is.

uninstalled parallels in safe mode and the mbp started fine. reinstalled parallels and have not noticed any problems since.
