I have been having a persistent problem with a Windows app running in Parallels 4. If I switch from Parallels while the app is running to a Mac app, the Windows app hangs. This occurs whether I'm in Coherence mode or Windows mode. The app is Analytica from Lumina. This problem did not occur in Parallels 3. I've yet to see the problem manifest with other apps.

I'm running OS 10.5.7 on a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB RAM. This problem exhibited itself long before the latest OS update.

    Hello robertdbrowniii,

    1) Open Parallels Desktop ( do not start the Virtual Machine ) => Configure.
    2) Optimization => Enable the option "Optimize performance for Virtual Machine" .
    3) Click ok.

Please email us the status of the issue.

That option was already selected. I spoke last night to the person who publishes the hanging app. He uses Parallels, too, and reports that he is experiencing the same problem.

    Technical file of hung app

Attached is the alert window I get and the technical file produced when I terminate the hung app.

I also set the video memory option to exclude 3D acceleration, and I set the video memory to 16 MB. This still did not prevent the failure.

    Hello robertdbrowniii,

    1) Launch Parallels Desktop => Do not start the Windows Virtual machine.

    2) On the menu bar click on Parallels Desktop => click on preference => Memory.

    3) Manually change the Memory to 600 MB => Click on OK.

    4) On on the Menu bar click on Virtual Machine => Configure => Memory.

    5) Manually Change the Memory to 1250 Mb => Click ok

Please reply us the status of the issue.

    Peter,

So far, that configuration seems to work. The failure I described appeared to be intermittent, but it always occurred within a few minutes of switching back and forth between Parallels and other Mac apps. After making the changes you recommend above, I don't see the problem after 45 minutes. Usually the problem manifested within that time frame. Given the intermittent nature of the problem, I can't say that the problem is solved until I see that the problem doesn't reappear over repeated use.

Would you mind explaining what you think the problem is and why the memory configuration you recommend above should work?

    Thanks,
    Rob

I did receive the attached warning when I set the memory to 1250 MB. I actually could not set the memory to exactly 1250 MB. Parallels forced it to 1252 MB.

    Dear Peter
I have the exact same problem as rob brown iii -- except that your solution does not work for me. It did work for him.
I have a Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz with 4GB RAM (whereas Rob's has 2GB). Could this make any difference?

It appears that the application hangs shortly after I do a copy from a Mac app, e.g. Word, and click on the Windows app to continue to work with it, so I thought it might be a problem relating to copy and paste between platforms.

We would both be intrigued to know why your solution works (for him).
I would be truly delighted to get a solution that also works for me.
Since I am CEO of a company that develops Windows-only software (Analytica), I will be forced to switch back to a Windows machine (and give up on Parallels) if I can't get this problem resolved.

    Thanks for your help.
    Cheers
    Max

    Dear Peter
Is there any chance you will be able to cure the problem I mentioned above?
(I first asked about this problem about 3 months ago.)
As I mentioned, it seems to be linked to the copy and paste functionality.
Analytica runs fine under Windows until I copy text in a Mac application, and switch back to Windows.
I have tried reinstalling the Parallels package that supports copy and paste between OS, but that doesn't help.

If I don't hear anything by next week, we will purchase VMWare and test if our product, Analytica, runs Ok with that (which one user tells us it does). If so, we will have to recommend VMWare to our Analytica customers using Macs when they upgrade -- that's about 40 people. I hope you understand. My preference is to stay with Parallels if we possibly can.
    Thanks
    Max
