i'll need some help: correcting partition, external memory & Pro Engineer problem

    Hi all,

I began the process of expanding my hard disk, but some how created another"E" one instead of expanding the already present "C" drive. Is there some way i could merge the two drives so i'll have only one drive which is the "C" drive. I have searched for similar threads but most of them gave instructions on expanding a partition and not merging two partitions. I considered the option of uninstalling the new partition and going about the process again as i don't have any data in the new partition but was not able to go about it.

Further more, I noticed when i try to connect external devices e.g memory it take much longer before it appears on my VM as compared to the regular way it does on my Mac interface or other computer. Is this problem unique to me or it's just how it does on all Xp VM.

Lastly, I recently installed the Pro Engineering software on my VM. The installation was cool and was glad being able to do that. but upon operating it, i notice it is some what unstable, as the icons take much longer to appear and it does not register a command fast which is important for such technical works.

I have checked for similar threads however, did not get any good solutions to meet this need. Can someone please help me out. I'm a bit new to all this so I'll really love some help with this anyone. Thanks

    James

You cannot merge 2 partitions, you can only expand, moreover, if you have some software installed on E:
    Software will stop function

    Hi John,
I don't have any software installed on E drive, if i should perform the expand process, will it join the E partition to C and not more space from my Mac interface?

    Solution is as follows:
    1. Add new HDD to VM
    2. Format it in Windows
    3. Copy all data from E to new drive
    4. Move pagefile to new drive
    5. restart VM
    6. in Windows command console
    diskpart
    select disk 0
    select partition 0
    expand

    Is This True?

Can you really expand a drive! That is make drive C: that was 7.79GB and make drive C: 20GB?

I have an empty drive E: How do I do it?

    1. Add new HDD to VM
Does this mean I have to make a third drive or are you repeating what James already did?

    2. Format it in Windows
    3. Copy all data from E to new drive
Sounds like you are telling James to do something he does not need to do because he has no data on E:

    4. Move pagefile to new drive
What's a pagefile? How do you move it? Why do I need a third drive?

    5. restart VM
    6. in Windows command console
    diskpart
    select disk 0
    select partition 0
    expand

    Sounds easy.

    It does not work.

Sorry, I wrote a long post explaining that the commands are incorrect as given, but the forums logged me out and I lost it.

It's not too hard to find the information on the internet how to do it. The bottom line is that not only are those commands as shown incorrect, but you cannot add to the boot partition, so all that rigamarole fails at the last step even when you do use the correct commands.

Parallels documentation and tech support keep pretending that people want to add another partition, not expand drive C: so all you get is a big run-around. Not only that, but if you do allocate more space attempting to do the impossible, you are then stuck with a big chunk of drive space with no use.

This is the third time I've tried to add a response to my first one. So I'm omitting the longer explanations.
1)John's diskpart commands don't work as given. 0 is not always correct and the last command is extend.
2)The whole thing does not work as you cannot extend drive C: (boot) period.

There is no way to expand your drive C: if it is full other than backing everything up and reinstalling. Parallels is pretending not to understand that we need to make drive C: bigger, not add more volumes that won't help because they have no answer.

Try Disk Management on the Windows side - create a single logical drive out of the two partitions?

Windows won't let you merge the boot partition. You need to buy a third party utility. I am looking into PartitionMagic and something form Acronis. The Symantec support just told me there is random data loss when merging a boot partition, so I guess PartitionMagic is out.
