I have a Windows XP VM set up to use host-only networking. It's been working fine for several months, including yesterday evening, but when I fired it up this morning, suddenly it can’t connect--the network status says that the network couldn’t assign a network address to the computer. I tried repairing the connection, but it fails to renew the IP address. Nothing has changed in the configuration of either the VM or OS X, so I’m a little mystified. I have two network connections, Local Area Connection 1 for the Parallels Network Adapter, and Local Area Connection 2 for the Cisco Systems VPN Adapter. The first says “Limited or no connectivity, Firewalled†and the second says “Disabled, Firewalled.†(I was able to use the VPN yesterday as well.) I haven’t tried messing around with the firewall settings, but since I haven’t changed them, I’m not sure why that would be the problem. I did try switching over to bridged Ethernet, but I've never been able to get that to work, and it still doesn't. (In that case, it seems to think it's connected, but I can't actually get to the Internet.) I’m using build 1970, Windows XP Home Edition with SP2, and OS X 10.4.8 on a MacBook Pro with a wireless network. Anyone have any idea what might have happened, or how I can fix it?
Hmmm--when I got home from work I tried turning off the Mac OS X firewall . . . and lo and behold, it suddenly worked. And then I turned the firewall back on . . . and it still works! I still have no idea what was going on there, but anyway, it seems to have righted itself (at least for now)!
