I noticed this with the new future that was added "Shared Networking". I can get to internet just fine but when I try to ping local box or access it directly from Explorer using
\\servername\Share. Server name can't be resolved. When I try pinging it I do not get anything. When I try to do \\x.x.x.x\Share it works fine.

    Which networking are you using?

With bridged networking this should work, with host-only or shared then this would not work.

XP is either using some form of multicast or the NetBIOS or NetBeui protocol to handle the name resolutions. All of those methods only work over the local subnet. Shared and host-only networking work by creating a new (virtual) subnet, meaning that the VM would be on a different subnet, so name resolution would not work.

If I use Bridged Ethernet it works fine with local LAN. If I select Shared networking than it does not work with local as I reported in my previous post. I would like to move to Shared since I have Verizon EVDO wireless cad. All above problems are when connected to LAN over wire.

    rjgebis,

Actually NetBIOS name lookup should work in Shared Networking mode. Can you please do the following:
    1. Try to open your server in Explorer (\\servername\Share) then issue 'nbtstat -c' and 'nbtstat -S'. Can you see servername listed?
    2. Issue 'nbtstat -a servername' and 'nbtstat -r'. Is servername lised now?

Right after starting Windows in Shared mode I did nbtstat -c and -S before trying to access any servers. This is what I got

    C:\Documents and Settings\bob>nbtstat -c
Failed to access NetBT driver -- NetBT may not be loaded

I tried to restart and changed from Shared to Bridged and I could not run nbtstat. I have Power Users privileges on this account. I will try to do this from Administrator for both Admin and Power User.

Ok, I just tried as Administrator in Shared mode and nbtstat works now. But when I run nbtstat -c or S I do not get anything. This is before and after I tried access in Explorer \\servername

Running netstat -a servername I get this

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>nbtstat -S

    Local Area Connection:
Node IpAddress: [10.9.1.2] Scope Id: []

    No Connections

10.9.1.2 is my IP in Windows.

Well, this means that you've disabled NetBIOS and Windows is using DNS and ActiveDirectory to find other Windows machines. To check if DNS does the thing please try 'nslookup servername' from your VM? If not, try 'nslookup servername.domain.of.yours'.
Regarding ActiveDirectory please talk to your network administrator.

Running nbtstat from Administrator account is not going to help. The service is most probably disabled as Windows is reporting. Here's how to enable NetBIOS (the top link found by Google):
    http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

OK, the above is irrelevant after you've got nbtstat working. What about 'nbtstat -a servername'?

When I switched to Bridged mode and logged as Administrator I get data back that looks ok when I do nbtstat -a servername

    Local Area Connection:
Node IpAddress: [10.20.34.62] Scope Id: []

    NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table

    Name Type Status
    ---------------------------------------------
    RDEV001 <00> UNIQUE Registered
    DMZ <00> GROUP Registered
    RDEV001 <20> UNIQUE Registered
    DMZ <1E> GROUP Registered

So I did not change anything on Windows except User account and Bridged and Shared. As you can tell I did both for Administrator in different modes. Looks like a bug to me... :) I am sure you guys get it. Let me know if there is any other info that you need to help out

Can you also provide your VM 'ipconfig' output for both Bridged and Shared and your Mac 'ifconfig'?

    Thanks rjgebis,

Just one more little bit. I was asking for your Windows 'ipconfig /all' in both Bridged and Shared. 'ifconfig' on Mac is usefull but I need ipconfig too...

Wait a second... Parallels DHCP settings indicate that NATed network (en3) is 10.211.55.0/24. This is totally OK and is the default. How come your VM has had 10.9.1.2 (from your msg #5)? If you had assigned a manual IP to Windows that is the problem. Configure Windows to use DHCP instead.

Yes I did changed the DHCP settings in parallels. But this problem was with default IP ranges as well. I jut changed them today anyway. I will get you the ipconfig /all right away. Stand by....

It turned out that Windows firewall may be the cause. Please try disabling it.

You can help me here by providing network traffic dump from inside XP. A free sniffer from http://www.ethereal.com/ will do. Start capturing and try accessing any server by name then save the dump and email to me (see your PM).

I will get you the ethereal dump in a few.

    Serv,

I did send you e-mail to support@ parallels .com "This e-mail is for Serv" I did added three cap files from ethereal. Let me know if there is anything you need. Please let me know what is going on with the 10 HD Realtak driver. Setting it to 10 FD performed worse? when trying to copy the same file before and after change. :) Good luck and happy hacking
