Imac core 2 duo + solidworks 2006 + build 1922 + xpsp2 = success! Thanks to kosh (if he/she reads this) for pointing me to the build supporting my machine. I am nervous when I look through the forum, reading of not just ordinary problems, but substantial ones - but, well, for me this experience so far has be more than I had hoped for: First, I thought because the emulated svga driver would make this a no show (btw, on a 24 imac, as a result cannot do the full 1920 x 1200 but that's no biggie for right now). But indeed, solidworks runs fine - for my assemblies and work - its more than peppy - and I can look forward to working exclusively on the mac - although I will play it safe and work concurrently on both machines for a while. I am really surprised by this - does soldworks load their own software opengl driver? In any case, the performance was not limiting at all (had full assembly open - approx 50 sub-assemblies linked). We occasionally use rhino 3d, and that too installed and ran very well. If future software updates improve the opengl driver, I will be very happy. That said, I wonder if anyone can tell me whether it will be possible to stick more than 2 gbs with the so dimms in the near future into the imac? Its perhaps not just a limitation of so dimms, but also the OS? I installed a couple of other winblows app we need in the office, and so far so good - ups shipping software, a couple utilities. Tomorrow I will attempt to instal Comsol & matlab (fingers crossed) - and if my experiences continue to prove positive - I think we will be buying a couple of more imacs at work - more parallel keys and I will also begin to feel more confident recommending this solution to some fence-sitters (windows users who are getting tired of the virus/adware issues). Thanks! Shelley
Well good on you! I just now got my new XP on Parallels and installed SW 2007. Pretty stinkin slow. Of course I'm used to running SW 2007 x64 edition on BootCamp so the performance difference is amplified for me. I'm looking forward to Parallels updating to a 64bit virtualizer. Rotating Soooo Sloooowly.
Good news. I've been on the fence waiting. Just to ask how is the render time in Rhino3D? SOlidworks??? You running any CAM applications??? Was wondering if their would be any issues wiht posting tothe mahcine.
Scottsss, I'm not using any CAM operations nor do I plan to do so in the future. However, I've used them in the past and would assume they'd do okay. It kinda depends on how advanced the CAM software is and how much eye candy you want. If you can get away with using just the processing functions and tool path solving I'd bet it would do just fine. If you want to watch the virtual machining job, you'd better pack a lunch. As far as machine connectivity goes, anything that can plug into the mac can plug into the Virtual PC. It just may take a little tweaking.
