I have just changed computers and used the migration/transfer of system info and applications onto my new MacPro. Everything ran fine except...!! Parallels was still shown but came up with "activation key not valid for this version". I have currently the latest 1940 release, the purchased key was for a previous release and I have upgraded as new releases came along without any problem.
I also notice that on the desktop the Windows XP Hard Drive is no longer shown. I am assuming that I have to reinstall XP and Parallels....
Any suggestions woould be most welcome....thanks all

You need to uninstall/reinstall Parallels. Paralles uses kernel extensions that the migration assistant will not copy over.

You should not have to reinstall your VM, but the I think the migration assistant will not copy it for you. Manually copy ~/Library/Parallels to your new machine from the old one to the new.

First, an upgrade, even preceded by an uninstall, should not require re-entering the key since the license file is not deleted by the uninstall.

Second, if your purchased key (for the same product ie Desktop for Mac) doesn't work, something else is wrong, since it should. Either it isn't being entered properly (typo, extra character at one end or the other from copy and paste, etc.) or something (Parallels app, or host OS) is corrupt. Find the cause, and fix it, and it will work.

IOW, no workaround is required -- you need to find and fix the cause.
