Ok, so I got it up and running through trying to install windows over and over again. I finally was able to get the internet working by doing host networking plus sharing. Then I installed all of the parallel tools. Everything was smooth, the only issue I had was with shared folder messing up after a few minutes and every time I opened Windows XP, I'd get the VTx doesn't work message but it'd boot into Windows just fine. Now after rebooting Mac OSX I can't get back into Windows and everytime I try it chokes up my computer. I'll move my mouse and it moves like a centimeter every 5 seconds and it just stutters then it goes into a color wheel and it just stutters forever until I force reboot my system. What's going on? I can't get back into Windows AT ALL. My specs: Mac Pro, 2.66 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, ATI x1900 512 MB Graphics Card, dual 24" Dell Monitors. I love the idea of parallels, but I'm getting frustrated. I got it working so smoothly, I have no idea why I can't get back into Windows XP. I had bonjour for printing and everything just running so well. I don't understand why there's a problem. Thanks for any help!
Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but when I try to open the Windows XP file on startup it tells me this: "Configuration file /Users/vasilissiskos/Library/Parallels/winxp.2/winxp.2.pvs is already used by another instance of Parallels Desktop. Do you want to override a lock and open file anyway (this action may be potentially dangerous since changes done by a concurrent user may be lost) ?" There is no other instance open so I don't understand what it's trying to tell me. Can anyone help me?
Parallels creates a file to indicate the VM is in use when you open the VM, and deletes it when you shut down. Abnormal shutdown leaves the file, thus the message. If you have no other VM running, just continue.
The lock file is there to prevent you from opening the same VM twice since having two instances of the same OS with different applications potentially writing to the same files or registry is not a good idea. So it's a simple semaphore. If the file exists, Parallels throws up that warning and refuses to open another copy of that VM unless you say yes. If it doesn't exist, it assumes there's no other copy of that VM open. If you crash in a VM or your OS X crashes, that file will be left lying around after rebooting since the VM didn't properly close down and delete that file. So if that's what happened to you, just tell Parallels to open the VM anyway, file or no file.
1884 Build Reboots mac After having installed to the Parallels-Desktop-1884-Mac.dmg upgrade I can't run it without my machine crashing. It first prompts me with: "Please select a virtual machine you wish to work with. You may either choose one of recently used virtual machines or create a new one." I have a single .pvs file to choose from (an XP install from an upgraded 98). Then I'm prompted with this: "Configuration file /Users/jack/Library/Parallels/win98/win98pvs is already used by another instance of Parallels Desktop. Do you want to override a lock and open file anyway (this action may be potentially dangerous since changes done by a concurrent user may be lost) ? Yes/No" Yes causes a reboot every time. This is really awful. How can I get back into my virtual machine and save my data there?
Build a new VM, and install a guest OS. Then add your original .hdd as a second disk to the new VM, and access your data. You may want to copy it to the new VM C drive (assuming Windows), and back up the new .hdd so you can always get to it.
Wow! In one day you guys got 100 builds done going from 1898 to 1998? I knew Macs were fast but I didn't know they could compile that fast!
Getting back to the freezing issue Hi. I'm running the latest everything 1898 parallels. All Apple software updated. I've had this freezing problem for quite a while. When I start Parallels the BIOS starts and then immediately the mouse freezes and moves very very slowly. The whole system is locked and the only solution is to restart the Mac Pro with the power button. My Mac: Mac Pro 2.66, 2GB, ATI X1900 At the moment this product is basically a waste of money. I hope that a fix for this problem is coming soon. /Trev
Do you have your OSX installed on a RAID or single HD? -- Sincerely, Patrick Mast, http://www.WinFakt.com http://www.xHarbour.com
Mike, After installing 1898 I get this: "Error occurred while trying to interact with Parallels driver! Parallels Desktop is either not installed or/and configured or has integrity problems, which prevent it from operating properly. Please reinstall the Parallels Desktop." Reinstalling doesn't help. I've recommended Parallels to others but now, after installing the 'updates' and losing all functionality and data, I'm not sure I could do the same. How can I get this thing running again? thanks.
Single HD (although there is a second disk) I have however managed to get this working!! I created a new VM and used the old harddisk configuration and it seems now to be stable. So one of the settings in the configuration file is causing Parallels to freeze OSX. If someone from Parallels would like my configuration file that freezes OSX then PM me. Cheers, /Trev
jpaulus, 1. Don't forget you are testing our internal build, not public one. 2. Try to reboot your Mac and then run Parallels again. 3. If it doesn't help then it means you probably moved some parts of application to a different folder and these parts didn't updated by installer. And it says that app lacks of integrity and refuse to run. To undo this please uninstall Parallels, find where you moved some parts of it and remove it as well. Then install Parallels again.
1. Only because I was instructed to since the released version failed. 2. Same problem. 3. I have moved no files so this option can not be pursued. Other options? thanks.
I still had the problem of freezing the whole system with version 1898 RC. After I logged in with the shift-key pressed, Parallels worked fantastic. I then tried to figure out which program was responsible for freezing the system in combination with Parallels. I found out that DragThing version 5.6.4 made Parallels freeze. I hope that this can help you in solving the problem and I will also report this to James Thomson, the developer of DragThing.
Andrew, Any other suggestions? What part of that other topic is of interest? It's a large thread. Thanks.
Andrew, So I've heard nothing back in over a week. I simply upgraded to the latest version of your product as instructed and now it is completely unusable. Have I now irretrievably lost all data on that "machine" that I've not heard any solutions put forth? Should I now recommend against this product for fear that others will lose data? What options do I have except for using your competitors products? thanks.
