I installed Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP on my MacBook Pro, then installed a PC game, Aspyr's Dreamfall. After installing six Dreamfall disks, I attempted to launch Dreamfall via alias in the XP virtual machine. Dreamfall keeps telling me to insert the starting disk, even though all six disks have been installed. Soooo, anyone had similar experiences with PC games and Parallels? Is this a virtual machine problem?
I suspect that this game requires the CD in the drive to start. And I also expect like most games that it is copy protected. In that case, it won't work in Parallels. Although I don't run XP now (I use Parallels for Linux - come on guys, give us Tools for Linux) I tried it out some time ago, and none of the old PC games I had that needed the CD in the drive would run.
Yes, I have Civilization III for Windows, and it needs the CD to start up. If I try it in Parallels it complains that I have a "Debugger" running. I believe this happens in Cedega as well, as there's some very low level jiggery-pokery in the CD copy protection systems that relies on direct hardware access.
I've done a bit of research and if you use Daemon Tools 3.4.7 with a disk image, you can get past the CD requirement. However, although this brings me this close ->| |<- to getting Civ3 running, and I can go through the game set up screens, Civ III crashes when starting the game. I guess we'll have to wait for the 3D graphics update to Parallels for this. Edit: by the way, Daemon Tools plus a disk image works in Boot Camp, so I don't have a corrupt disk. I'll try this in VMWare on a Windows machine later. Edit 2: So, the same disk image and Daemon Tools allows me to play Civ III in a WinXP VMWare VM. It seems we have a Parallels problem here.
Fired up by your post, I tried getting daemon tools, but it tlls me I'm instlling ont an "unsupported platform" - I guess that means Windows 98se is a no-no
I too installed Daemon; no luck In response to previous suggestion to install Daemon Tools as a way of circumventing the VM restriction on PC game, I installed latest version of Daemon tools, but had no luck in getting it to run. Had to uninstall Daemon Tools and uninstall the PC game I had hoped to run on my XP virtual machine on MacBook Pro.
