    i had a 13" black macbook running os x 10.5.6. parallels 3 build 5500 and then 5620. I have a gigaware (radioshack) usb>serial cable (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3120513). In parallels, i'm running windows xp service pack 3.
When I would connect the usb>serial cable, a window would pop up in parallels asking if i want to connect this device to the vm. i'd select yes. then it would ask for the driver (which i had installed prior to connecting the cable)everything would work great.

Now I have a brand new 15" macbook pro. still running os x 10.5.6. parallels 3 build 5620. Same cable, installed same driver in windows. When I connect the cable nothing happens. If i go to devices>usb in the parallels menus, it lists a usb - serial connector in the list. I can select it so it's checked, but still nothing happens in the vm. even in device manager, nothing shows up by connecting the usb>serial adaptor.

If I boot the macbook pro directly to windows, when i connect the cable, it is recognized and works just fine. but in parallels, it never sees that the cable is connected. please help.

more info on this usb issue

It seems no matter what usb hardware i connect (except for usb thumb drives) nothing happens except the hardware becomes listed under devices>usb. but even when i select it, it never actually connects to windows... no chime sound, nothing added to device manager, nothing can be found when scanning for added hardware. If I'm booted directly into windows, all the hardware is recognized and works fine.

however, if i connect a usb thumbdrive in parallels. i get the normal window asking if i want to connect it to the vm or to the mac.

    please help

i've removed and added the usb controller both in windows and in parallels. i've uninstalled and reinstalled parallels tools... no luck.

Thanks for your reply john. i did add a 2nd vm and it still didn't work.
I think i did what you're referring to. i went to new > custom > pointed it to my boot camp windows set up and ran windows from that vm instead of the one that pops up automatically... still no luck.

    Hi John. Ticket # is:
    660318

I've gone through all the initial steps with somebody and i've been waiting a couple days to hear back from someone since it's been "escalated"

while i was waiting to hear back from someone, i figured i'd check in here to see if anyone had a solution.

    thanks
    Brian

I had to delete the USB controller in Device Manager, remove the USB option in the VM config, then add back; USB then worked as intended and new devices were detected by Windows (until suspend/resume). See http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=22027

    usb>anything not working

yeah i had tried that. i removed the usb controllers from the device manager, removed the usb controller option from vm and rebooted.... added them again and rebooted... windows loaded the drivers for the usb controller and still the same result... i also tried starting a new vm and no luck there either.

    this is driving me crazy.

Statman, please mention device model, also
we have special build 3810, which allows us to debug USB related problems.
    http://download.parallels.com/suppo...lsDesktop-parallels-en_US-4.0.3810.342466.dmg
Please download it and install and perform additional step bellow
Set following flag under Configure -Hardware -> CPU -> System flags property.
    (Select Show advanced settings)
    Please type
    devices.usb.loglevel=3
click OK, and start Virtual machine

Connect USB device to VM, wait for connection till error, and submit problem report from
Parallels Desktop - Help menu -Report a problem and let me know report ID.

John, My device is in my sig.....what more do you want? I installed the 3180 update a couple of days ago. No change.

Let me restate the issue (as described in the first post). When I connect my blackberry to the usb port, it shows up in the Devices>USB, but nothing happens. The software that is used for updating and backing up the blackberry never finds the device. There is no error reported. I will do as you requested....

I too am have problems with USB devices in version 4.0 that I did not have in 3. If I shutdown or restart the VM the usb devices will be recognized. If I suspend the VM (which I normally do to save time) are resume, once the system is up and running and I plug in a USB device it will not be recognized. You can go to device and the USB device is selected but it does not show up.

I have learned however that I can go to the device manager in XP and right click on the computer name and scan for hardware changes and it will then find the USB device and I can use it. I can unplug and re-plugin the usb device and it will continue to work until I suspend and resume again. Then I have to repeat the same process over again.
