    Hey there,

I've tried searching and there's no easy answer so I hope someone can elaborate on my issue for me.

Basically I'm running a Mac OS X 10 and on Parallels I'm running Vista SP1.

I recently just bought this USB to RS232 cable and I tried to install the driver on the Vista VM and it just says make sure its for 32-bit processors and it is.

Because on my desktop when I stick in the USB to RS232 cable Vista automatically detects it and I can install the driver just fine.

When I plug the USB to RS232 cable in my macbook it doesn't detect it in Vista VM. Whats going on here? and I can't seem to install the driver.

But when I stick in a Flash stick 1GB the Vista VM detects that and asks me like do you want the guest os to use it?

So if anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it!

    Thanks,
    Steve

    UPDATE:

I installed the driver in Mac and it seems to be there but I cannot turn it on because in network settings its set to default and I have to enter in my phone number, username, and password to connect?

But I am not using it as a internet connection.

If you installed it in mac OS, it detects it as modem, so you need to uninstall drivers,
as for Vista , what you can see in Start right Click on My Computer properties

Hey Jon thanks for the quick reply. Do you mean I have to uninsyall the driver on mac
? Like the driver I just installed for mac? And then on vista I do really c anything. There's no ports drop down and I can't configure the us also in mac os x I can delete the driver but it stills shows in the network menu.

Probably you can point me to model and manufacturer site, and also please check what is shown in VM, when you click on My computer -Properties?

    Hey John,

In my computers -> properties I get the standard window showing your processor and memory allocated in VM to it.

In the hardware manager I believe it is I can see like CD/DVD drivers, HDD, Monitor, etc...

But what I cannot see is the ports category where you can assign COM1 to a USB device or Communications device such as a printer.

Now on my Macbook OS X I haven't installed a printer but I have installed the USB to RS232 Converter. And in VM at the top in "Devices-> USB" I see that I can click USB Converter when I have the cable plugged in. When I don't have the cable plugged in it dissapears. But yet in my Vista PC as soon as I plug in the cable Vista detects it as a new hardware and I am able to put in the CD provided and install the driver for it.

But when I plug it into my Macbook OS X running Vista with Parallels its not able to detect it at all.

So what do you suggest I do?

Also the manufacturer of the FTDI chip is http://www.ftdichip.com
and the manufacturer of the cable I cannot say because its made in china and doesn't look like it had a manufacturer. It came in a red box. But here's the link to the product: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.9320

    Thanks,
    Steven

    Hey John,

Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it.

Late last night I actually re-installed Parallels and for some really odd reason it works now. When I plug in the USB to RS232 device in VM and like the Vista PC a pop-up came up saying new device detected and I installed the driver successfully. Now I'm just going to test to see if the cable settings and everything actually works.

    Thanks,
    Steven
