I got parallel two days ago. Before I installed V4.0, I was running V3.0. I had previous problem with my V3.0 after extending the hard drive from 8,000MB to 10,000MB. Before the process of extending the hard drive, I was required to end the suspended stage to my Parallels Desktop (PD). I did just that, and when I relaunch the start of my PD, it stated that boot-up failed from hard drive. Ignoring this problem, I went ahead and installed/upgraded V4.0 in thinking that this problem would be resolved.

I installed the V4.0 disk into the hard drive and went through the installation process without a problem. I was then advised that my data for V3.0 need to be backed up and converted which was done. Just when I launch the start of V4.0, it stated that boot-up failed which was the same problem I had with my V3.0.

The next step I took was deleting both V3.0 and V4.0 completely off my hard drive and start fresh from the beginning with the installation of V4.0 (I backed up my data from V3.0 before this problem occurred). I made sure that all Parallels related files on my hard drive was deleted. I then when ahead and installed in the disk which indicated that there was an upgrade which I downloaded from Parallels' website and continue the installation. However, I couldn't install the programs on the CD, and I was prompted to restart my computer. When I click on restart, there was an alert message saying that the programs were installed incorrectly.

I realized that there are a number of people that have this same situation and some of this cases were caused by the firewall; however, I think my case may be different. I had no problem installing the program when V3.0 was still on my hard drive, so I think it is not a firewall issue since I did not change the system preference.

    Any help would be appreciated

    -John

If you provide the exact message of error, build number you are trying to install (dmg file name, size)
From the forst point it seems to me that files from Parallels Desktop are still there,
probably creating ticket to support will be good idea

I no longer have access to the "exact message of error" since I deleted V3.0 and V4.0. I am just trying to start fresh from the beginning with V4.0.

    Build #: 3540
    dmg #: 4.0.3540.209165

I have made sure that all the Parallels Desktop Files are wiped away from my hard drive by going into Finder/Spotlight to search for such files.

Any other advices you would recommend?

In addition, should I mail in the rebate even though I can't install the program or should I wait?

I've filed ticket #25264 and am stuck as cannot install Parallels Tools in 4.0. Should I uninstall 4.0 and then try to install again? If I decide to revert back to 3.0 (build 5626), how do I restore the backed up files (backup)?

    Hi John,

I have tried to installed the 4.0 version and the following error appears. The link below is the actual problem I am having.

    http://kb.parallels.com/en/5732

When it gets to the state of installation, it seems to download the program on the CD to my hard drive for about a second and then it go straight to the restart button menu. However, when I do just that, the "alert" message appears. I did set my firewall settings as mention on that link.

I found the /var/log/install.log, but I'm not sure what you mean by "following logs"?

    I removed my previous post
I checked log files, and I suppose that you tried to upgrade to version 4, while VM was running
Please install Parallels Desktop 3 again, remove it as described in http://kb.parallels.com/en/4790
    and install version 4
if problem is still there please create ticket in support

I have the same problem. i.e. I click Install after going through the acceptance of the terms, entering my root password, etc. The download appears to start and abruptly stops with the message indicating I need to restart my computer and when I try, I am informed the program was installed incorrectly. See log file for details. My only recourse was to quit the installer. There was no log file created, I am not installing over a version 3 and the version I am trying to install is: 4.0.3540.209168 dmg. I have tried to install several times with the same outcome, I have tried safe mode as well.

Well the install process went OK. Now I am stuck at the Virtual Machine Upgrade - Searching for new devices )step 2 of 4...) The progress bar has not moved past 50% for 30 minutes. What to do now?
