    Hi all --

This one has me stumped. Windows XP (SP3) froze up while shutting down. I tried to use the Shut Down button, and the VM appeared to be shutting down. Then Parallels locked, so I did a force quit.

Now, when I launch Parallels, the Windows XP window comes up, but the Start, Shutdown and Suspend buttons are all grayed out in the toolbar. The Virtual Machine menu shows the only option as being Stop.

Is there a way to reset this VM using Terminal or something?

    Thanks!

Try rebooting your Mac. Also, check the state of VM's hard disk -- in Finder go Documents/Parallels/<VM name>.pvm, Ctrl-click it, choose Show package contents, highlight .hdd file and open it with Explorer.

Rebooting appears to have done the trick. Strikes me as odd, but I'll take it anyway. Thanks!

    Another resolution

Quick FYI to all, I had the same similar symptoms, freeze while suspending, had to force quit. Except no amount of reboots would fix my problem.

Everytime I tried to resume the vm (that was the only choice since other were grayed out) would result in the messages in the system.log file:
    Oct 14 08:07:59 Richtop [0x0-0x1e01e].com.parallels.desktop.console[870]: Qt: internal: -108: Error ATSUMeasureTextImage text/qfontengine_mac.cpp: 526
    Oct 14 08:07:59: --- last message repeated 499 times ---
Oct 14 08:07:59 Richtop [0x0-0x1e01e].com.parallels.desktop.console[870]: *** process 870 exceeded 500 log message per second limit - remaining messages this second discarded ***

What did the trick for me was to force edit the settings with stop and quit option. This force the resumed VM to be shutdown and after that I was able to get it restarted.
