Cannot install Parallels Tools in PD4

I upgraded to v4 with no problems (running Parallels Desktop on a Mac Book Pro C2D, guest OS is Windows XP Pro SP3). The initial Parallels Tools installation went fine. However, I found I could not get the Windows start menu from the Parallels Dock icon. Looking through the forums, I saw a number of threads suggesting that uninstalling and reinstalling the parallels tools might fix it. I was able to uninstall through the Windows add/remove software control panel. After restarting, I am unable to reinstall Parallels tools. It always fails to install the Parallels Shared Folders driver, then fails to uninstall the Parallels Shared Folders driver when it goes to the rollback.

This is killing my productivity, so any help would be appreciated. I need to get some real work done today.

I was able to roll windows back to a restore point, which brings me back to a usable state.

Then, I spanned displays which made the task bar get in the way of the dock. So I moved the task bar to the top of the screen and that made the Start Menu work from the Parallels dock icon. So . . . pat myself on the back and give myself a handshake.

    drexel13,

The solution assumes that guest OS is Windows XP 32-bit OS and is installed to the drive C:\

    1) Please unzip the attachment to some place and start virtual machine.

    2) Right-click to the CD-ROM Icon on parallels VM window and choose "connect image". Select the unzipped prl_fs_drv.iso file. As well the image may be connected through VM configuration

    3) After Windows is booted, log on to it as Adminitstrator or some other user with Admin-rights, open the CD-Rom content (usually drive D:\ ; My Computer -> D:) and select install.bat. After that you should see several messages and invitation to reboot.

    4) Please reboot the VM and try to install Parallels Tools. This time it should work.

    5) install.bat should log all actions to the c:\temp\setup.log. If something will go wrong with the solution, please send me this file.

Is this .zip file still a valid solution or something I should try? I have posted in another thread and also opened a support ticket, but as stated elsewhere, I am very anxious to get Parallels Tools working so I can get productive...

    Still not working for me.

I have enabled the CDrom in my XP configuration. I have attached the parallels-tools iso (first) then also this iso. But I never see a CDrom in my list of devices. It is in the bottom frame when in window mode, but I cannot get it to show in 'My Computer'. Hence, I cannot ever click on 'setup.exe' to finish the update and every time I start my VM, I get the 'upgrading..." dialog, etc.

    What can I do next?

Yep. in your case, problem is that CD/driver is corrupted,
in Device Manager delete CD/DVD , and IDE-Atapi second channel , restart VM
